Several area winter sports prep teams return

Several of the local prep Winter sports teams will resume action today, Jan. 5, with the remainder of the teams getting into action the first part of next week. They have been off because the Colorado High School Activities Association’s ban on organized practices between Christmas Eve and New Year’s Day. Teams resumed organized workouts on Wednesday, Jan. 2. Coaches throughout the area were hoping their student-athletes spent some time working out on their own or at least staying in shape. Open gyms were available throughout the holiday period for them.

Montezuma-Cortez High School varsity girls basketball team will resume play at Farmington High at 7:30 p.m. today. MCHS wrestlers will be on the mat at the Florence Tournament also today. Mancos boys and girls hoopsters will visit Ignacio beginning at 6 p.m. today. Mancos wrestling will compete at Nucla all day today as well.

The remainder of the winter sports teams will begin action the first of next week.

The Panther girls, who are getting steady play from Stefanie Allison, are getting better and better each week. Cortez wrestlers have been struggling lately but hope to rebound and wrestle well this week. Mancos boys and girls hoop teams are coming off playing in their own Blue Jay Classic. Both finished third in their respective divisions. The Blue Jay boys are paced right now by Travis Clark while the girls are led by Jori Yeomans. MHS wrestlers are doing excellent right now. They are led by Scott Koppenhafer.

The Panther boys basketball team, ranked no. 3 among Class 4A schools, return to the hardwoods in a rare Monday night game at home against Aztec (N.M.) High School. They are paced by Marcus Mortensen.

Dolores County boys and girls basketball teams visit Cortez JVs on Thursday, Jan. 10. DCHS boys are led by Lyle Joe while the girls are led by Shandra Johnson. MCHS wrestles will dual at home against Monticello, Utah, that night in Ron Wright Memorial Gym.

Dolores High boys and girls basketball teams finally return to action at home against Bayfield. Dolores boys are led by Cullen Zion while the no. 5 Class 2A ranked girls are led by Jennifer Trevillian. MCHS girl swimmers will hit the water at the annual Albuquerque Academy Invitational on Friday and Saturday, Jan. 11-12. MCHS is led by Tessa Haukeness.

Mancos wrestlers will compete all day at the Navajo Nation Invitational in Shiprock, N.M., on Saturday, Jan. 12. DCHS wrestlers, led by Kyle Riddell, will compete at the Paonia Invitational. DCHS boys and girls will again be in action as they visit Ignacio. DHS wrestlers, led by Derek Thompson, will also be at Paonia.
