Frieda Mae Warner
Frieda Mae Warner was born on May 31, 1916, in
Indianapolis, Ind. to William H. and Maggie D. (Masters) Bruce. She passed
away on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital. Frieda
was 85.
In June of 1939 Frieda married her sweetheart, Robert E.
Warner in Indianapolis. Frieda became a loving homemaker who enjoyed
gardening, and who greatly treasured her family. Freida and Robert moved to
the Lewis area five years ago.
Her son, Arthur (Marcia) Warner of Lewis; her
grandchildren, Stephanie (Ina) Serff of Aurora, Colo., and Suzanne Warner;
and five great-grandchildren survive Frieda.
Her parents, three sisters, and one brother preceded her
in death.
No services have been scheduled at this time. Arrangements are being
handled through the Ertel Funeral Home.
Anna Mae Tullis
Funeral services for Anna Mae Tullis, a longtime Cortez
resident will be held at 10:30 a.m., Monday, Feb. 4, at the Cortez Church
of Chris. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Mr. Hunt Zumwalt
will be officiate.
Anna was born to John and Anna (Rafferety) Conkle on
Feb. 19, 1916, in Salem, Ohio. She passed away on Wednesday, ,Jan. 30, 2002
at the Southwest Memorial Hospital. Anna was 85 years old.
A talented artist, Anna enjoyed oil painting and various
arts and crafts. She also took pleasure in traveling and going to church
functions. Anna had a love for roses and was fond of gardening. Her biggest
pride and joy, however, was her family.
Anna's two children, Shirley and Arthur Thomas of Lewis,
and Don and Carol Tullis of Cortez, survive her. She also leaves five
grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.
She is preceded in death by her parents, and her
husband, Donald K. Tullis Sr.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Joseph "Joe" G. Jarvis
Memorial services for Joseph "Joe" G. Jarvis
will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Feb. 4, at the Cortez First United
Methodist Church. The Rev. Lynn Evans will officiate.
Joe was born on Jan. 31, 1921, in Weston, W. Va., to Roy
Samuel and Opal Inez (Connell) Jarvis. He passed away on his 81st birthday
on Thursday, Jan. 31, 2002, at the Southwest Memorial Hospital.
On Sept. 27, 1946, Joe took Barbara Shock to be his
bride and life companion. Bobbie passed away on March 16, 1997, leaving an
empty place in Joe's life that was impossible for him to reconcile.
Moving to Cortez in 1956, Joe immediately became
involved in the development and betterment of Cortez. He was known as a
community servant, serving on the Cortez City Council and filling a term as
mayor; was president of the Chamber of Commerce and Rotary; served as
chairman of the Cortez Sanitation District, was an active member of the
Cortez Methodist Church, and sat on the Cortez Library Board.
Joe and several other Cortez men were instrumental in
forming Little League baseball competition and constructing the Little
League fields located on Empire Street. Most recently, he volunteered his
time with the Colorado Welcome Center where he enjoyed meeting the people
passing through Cortez and being of assistance to them.
Surviving Joe are his children and their families; Jane
Prancan and her friend, Dick MacKnight of Denver, Colo.; Sam and Judy
Jarvis of Cortez; and his beloved grandchildren, Nate Jarvis of Denver, Amy
Jarvis and Erin Jarvis both of Fort Collins, Colo.
Joe is also survived by his sister, Barbara Warman and
her husband, Roy of Ames, Iowa; sister-in-law, Juanita Cunningham of Jane
Lew, W. Va.; special friends, Hal and Patty Lassiter of Louisville, Ky.;
and a host of dear friends.
Memorial contributions can be made with the Cortez United Methodist
Church Thrift Shop or to Colorado Welcome Center. Services will be under
the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Simon Jones Sr.
Funeral services for Cortez resident Simon Ray Jones Sr.
will be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 31, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic
Church. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Father Kevin Novack
will be officiating. A Rosary service was held Wednesday evening at the
Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Simon was born on Feb. 1, 1907, to Simon F. and Lydia
(Pike) Jones in Ft. Duchesne, Utah. He passed away on Jan. 28, 2002, at the
Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. He was 94.
On Feb. 5, 1931, in Durango, Simon married Dolorita Tapia.
In December of 1942 he joined the U.S. Navy Seabees. At the rank of chief
machinist mate, Simon defended his country during World War II.
He later became a dedicated member of several groups
including the Knights of Columbus, VFW, and the American Legion. He was
also a wholehearted member of the Cortez Bowling Leagues.
He is survived by his beloved wife, Dolorita, of Cortez;
and his children, Simon R. Jones Jr. of Glendale, Ariz., and Eleanor M.
Bisson-Carter of Cortez survive Simon. Ten grandchildren, 15
great-grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren also survive him.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Edward Odell Ward
Graveside services for longtime Cortez resident, Edward
Odell Ward, will be held at 2 p.m., Friday, Feb. 1, at the Cortez Cemetery.
Visitation has been set for Thursday, from 4 to 6 p.m., at the Ertel
Memorial Chapel.
Odell was born the son of Edward Black Newton Ward and
Texie Myrtle (Riddle) Ward on Dec. 31, 1912 in Elida Territory, N.M. He
passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Mon., Jan. 28, 2002 at the
age of 89.
Odell enjoyed working with wood as well as hunting and
fishing. He was a devoted Denver Broncos fan loving to watch their games on
the television.
Surviving Odell are his wife of 68 years, Winnie Rose
(Hughes) Ward of Cortez; his children, Della Joan (Arlen) Gupton of
Longmont, Colo., Norma Jean Ragan of Antlers, Okla., Edward Odell (Carol)
Ward Jr. of Cortez, Phyllis Kay Mollohan of Cortez, Texie Gay (Darrell) of
Dove Creek, Rosalee (Ted) Hamilton also of Dove Creek, and James Gale (Karna)
Ward of Cortez.
He leaves also 22 grandchildren, 30 great-grandchildren,
and three great-great grandchildren; and one sister, Eugene Hannah.
Preceding him in death were his parents, one brother,
and one sister.
Memorial contributions can be made with Hospice of
Montezuma. Services will be under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Miles S. Jackson
Miles S. Jackson, 84, of Mancos, passed away Jan. 26,
2002, at his home in Mancos.
A memorial service is planned for a later date.

Wanda Kay Martinez
Wanda Kay Martinez, 49, of Youngsville, N.M., passed
away Jan. 23, 2002, at Presbyterian Hospital in Albuquerque after a lengthy
illness.
Wanda was born the fourth daughter of Sarah E. (Baker)
Honey and Thomas Charles Honey of Mancos on Feb. 14, 1952, at Durango,
Colo.
Wanda attended school at Mancos. After graduation, she
married Lonnie Maness of Durango.
Wanda and her young son, James, moved to New Mexico in
1976, where she worked for the New Mexico Game and Fish Department for many
years.
Wanda is survived by her mother, Sarah Honey of Mancos;
husband Robert Martinez of Youngsville; son James Maness of Mancos;
grandson Santiago Maness; three stepchildren, Roberta Martinez, Beverly
(Michael) Garcia and Aaron Martinez of New Mexico; seven
step-grandchildren; three sisters, Shirley (Wayne) Hamblin, Karen (Oren)
Pilcher of Mancos, Linda (Michael) Miller of Rathdrum, Idaho; 10 nieces and
six nephews and many friends.
Preceding her in death were her father, Thomas Honey;
grandfather Jefferson Davis Baker; grandmother Ilva Bell Honey; grandfather
Charles William Honey and one stepson, Nathaniel Martinez.
Funeral services were held Monday, Jan. 28, 2002, at De Vargas Funeral
Chapel in Espanola, N.M. Interment followed at Santa Fe National Cemetery,
Santa Fe, N.M.
James Bruce Russ
Funeral services for James Bruce Russ will be held at 2
p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Jim was born on July 26, 1943 in Overland, Kan. to Bruce
James and Dorothy (Eggers) Oberlin. He passed away on Thursday, Jan. 24,
2002 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital. Jim was 58 years old.
Jim was a Navy veteran who later worked for John Deere
as a mechanic. He is survived by his children, Lisa Anne (Warren) Howard,
Caroline Jean Russ, Kathy Lynn Townsend, Michelle Marie (Dominick) DeBatte,
James Brian (Terralena) Russ and Michael Sean Russ, all of Florida. He also
leaves several grandchildren, two brothers and three sisters.
He was preceded in death by his parents and two sisters.
Angel Luis Gonzalez
Funeral services for Angel Luis Gonzalez will be held at
5:30 p.m., Monday, Jan. 28, at the Newman Center in Las Cruces, N.M. Father
Mitch Dowalgo will be officiating.
Angel was born to Vincente and Dolores (Rivera) Gonzalez
on Aug. 4, 1932 in Coamo, Puerto Rico. He passed away on Wednesday, Jan.
23, 2002 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 69.
Angel joined the Army and served his country during the
Korean War. He was a decorated soldier who came home with many medals
including the Purple Heart.
A proud Puerto Rican who loved and lived by the Catholic
Church, Angel dedicated his time and life to his faith. Deeply involved in
the ministries, Angel was a communion minister, prison minister, C.Y.O.
counselor, and peer counselor.
He will always be remembered and thought of as a
generous man who opened his home to anyone, and always had a meal waiting
for him or her. With a smile on his face Angel always remained friendly and
loving to his friends, peers, and family.
He made candy magic for all children. And all children
loved him. No matter where he went, Angel touched the lives of those who
surrounded him. He will always be loved, and dearly missed.
Angel is survived by his wife, Jenny Gonzalez; and their
children, Angel Lewis and wife Sarah, Carlo Paul and wife Ruth, Anna and
husband Reyne, Rachel, Veronica and husband Donald, Dolores and husband
Kent, Elizabeth, Jenny and husband Robert, Cecilia and husband Sean. He
also leaves his grandchildren, Donald, Steven, Licia, Kim, Christina,
Carlo, Paul, Raquel, Laura, Josiah, Gabriel, Brittney, Chandler, Joshuha,
Jerimiha, Jerod, Anna Beck and the triplets.
His siblings, Joe Gonzalez, Vicente (Myrle) Gonzalez,
Calita (Tomas) Guzman and his niece, Carmen (George) Lubinski also survive
him.

Margaret "Peg" Middleton Roman
Memorial services for Margaret "Peg" Middleton
Roman will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 29, in the main sanctuary at
the First United Methodist Church in Clermont, Fla.
Peg was born on Dec. 21, 1908 in Wadena, Minn. to
Reverend Edward and Wilhelmina (Krinkie) Bollenbach. She passed away on
Sunday, Jan. 20, 2002 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos. She was 93.
Peg was very active in the First United Methodist Church
in Clermont, and was a member of the First Methodist Women's Club. She also
maintained membership with the Clermont Garden Club, and was a part of the
Order of Eastern Star, Grand Chapter of Florida, for 50 years.
Peg is survived by her children, John E. Middleton of
Annandale, Va., Marjo and husband, Richard Westerman of Dolores; and
grandchildren, John T. Middleton of Southwest Harbor, Maine, Sara Middleton
of Seattle, Wash., and Gus and Gunnar Westerman of Dolores.
Remembrances may be sent to the Peg Roman Choir Fund at
the First Methodist Church, 970 7th Street Clermont, Fla. 34711.

Leroy Truman Hatch Sr.
Funeral services for Leroy Truman Hatch Sr. will be held
at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 25, at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in
Cortez. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery. Visitation is from 2
to 6 p.m., today at the Ertel Memorial Chapel.
Leroy was born on Oct. 19, 1937 to Truman Hatch and Eva
Lane Mills in Towaoc. He passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 22, 2002 at the San
Juan Regional Hospital in Farmington, N.M. He was 64.
Leroy stressed the importance of education to all young
people, and became a truant officer with Tom Armenta. He was also very
involved with the Native American Church. An active participant in many
functions, Leroy did feather fans and carvings of drums sticks. Working
with his cattle and hunting were a few of the activities Leroy enjoyed. He
also treasured spending time with children.
His children, Lloyd Arrive of Ft. Duchesne, Utah, Leroy
Hatch Jr., Felicita LaRose Foulsear both of Roosevelt, Utah, and Persingula
LaRose of Towaoc, 12 grandchildren, and one great-grandchild on the way,
survive Leroy. His brother, Wilson Hamlin of Towaoc and his friend,
Katherine Hatch of Towaoc, also survive him.
Preceding him in death are his parents and his four
siblings, Billy Lopez, Evalina Lopez, Louis Hatch, and Calvern
"Coffee" Hamlin.

Delbert G. Phillips
Delbert G. Phillips was born on March 17, 1937 in Lamar,
Colo. to Kenneth Clyde and Velma (Remer) Phillips. He passed away on
Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at his home in Mancos. He was 64.
Delbert served his country by joining the Navy. He later
went to work as a construction worker for the Dow Chemical Company in
Paradise, Texas.
His daughter, Mary Robin Brooks of Newberry, Mich., his
brother, Gary Phillips of Woodinville, Wash., and his sister, Jean Western,
survive him.
No services have been scheduled at this time. Arrangements are being

Angela Dawn McDonald
Funeral services for Angela Dawn McDonald, a longtime
resident of Cortez, were held on Monday, Jan. 21, at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel. Interment followed at the Arriola Cemetery.
Angie was born to Roy and Anna (Blake) Stafford on Dec.17,
1970 in Octavia, Okla. She passed away on Friday, Jan. 18, 2002 at her home
in Cortez. She was 31.
Angie enjoyed the outdoors where she camped, gardened, and
walked. She took pleasure in bowling. Angie also loved her children dearly.
Her parents, Roy and Anna Stafford of Cortez; her husband,
Johnny McDonald of Cortez; her children, Shannon, Tyler, Victoria, Patrick,
Danielle and her infant daughter survive her, as do her three stepchildren,
Jeremy McDonald, Misty McDonald, and Sarah McDonald.
She also leaves her siblings, Pam (David) Sitton, Roy
Junior Stafford, Stephanie (Jim) Ratliff all of Cortez, Machelle (Chad)
Taggart of Dolores, Sean (Feleena) Stafford, April Stafford, Corey
Stafford, Brandon Stafford, Lindsay Stafford, and Karla Stafford, all of
Cortez.
Robert Binkly
Robert Lee Binkley, 59, of Dove Creek, passed away on
Jan. 17, 2002, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. No services are planned at
this time. Cremation will take place.
Mr. Binkley was born to Jole Alexander and Virginia Ann
Smith Binkley on June 13, 1942, at Chanute, Kan. He attended schools in
Chanute until the eighth grade, when he began attending schools in Denver.
There, he graduated from East High School. He went on to further his
education in computer sciences and became a computer repair technician.
Mr. Binkley moved to Dove Creek in August of 2000 from
Los Angeles, Calif. He owned and operated the GCS and Associates Company,
providing computer repair service in the area. Mr. Binkley enjoyed camping,
hunting and fishing, and hiking and photography with his family and
friends. He also enjoyed taking pictures of his niece and nephew’s
wedding in May, 2001.
Robert Binkley is survived by five children; close
fiend, Sally Cannon of Egnar, Colo.; sister, Nancy (Carl) Broderick of Dove
Creek; several nieces and nephews and friends and grandchildren.

Mary Johnson Tapaha
Funeral services for Mary Johnson Tapaha, lifelong
resident of Red Mesa and Montezuma Creek, Utah will be held on Saturday,
Jan. 19, 2002, at the Navajo Full Gospel Church in Red Mesa beginning at 10
a.m. Interment will follow at the Sunrise Cemetery in Red Mesa.
Mary was born in White Mesa just two miles east of the
current family home on a date selected by the Bureau of Indian Affairs as
March 1, 1911, to Slim Todachinne and Bitahnii Bitsii' Yisch'illi Bitsi'.
After a lengthy illness Mary passed away on Thursday, Jan. 17, 2002, at the
Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. She was 90.
Mary was of the Nakaidine'e clan and her father's clan
was Todich'ii'nii. Her mother died when she was just a young lady. Mary,
with the help of her aunt and grandmother, then had to raise her younger
siblings. She was a very hard working mother and grandmother who raised
hers as well as her sisters' children all as her own.
Her life revolved around her herd of sheep and goats
along with a few head of cattle. Mary also enjoyed weaving rugs.
Survivors include her daughters Daisy Mustache (Clark)
of Red Mesa, and Jean Pipkin (Milton) of Blanding, Utah; son, Frank Tapaha
(Lula) of Red Mesa; step-daughters, Lorene Nacki (Jack) of Red Mesa, Rose
Benally (Clyde) of Cortez, Lorretta Broadway (Mark) of Farmington,N.M. and
Pauline Rockwell of Aneth, Utah; step-son, John D. Tapaha (Rosie) of
Kirtland, N.M.; brother, Silas Dale of Gallup, N.M.; 29 grandchildren; 37
great-grandchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.
Preceding Mary in death are her parents; her late
husband, Johnson Tapaha; her daughter, Arlene Mustache; her brother, Slim
Todachinnie Begay, and sister, Louise T. Nez. Mary also lost four children,
Joe Tapaha, Roy Tapaha, John H. Tapaha, and Della Tapaha during the measles
epidemic in 1951.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Calvin Dalton Joe
Funeral services for Calvin Dalton Joe, a resident of
the Aneth, Utah area will be held at 10 a.m., Friday, Jan. 18, at the Ertel
Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery.
Calvin was born to Willie and Betty (Lee) Joe on Aug.
18, 1968 in Shiprock, N.M. He passed away on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at St.
Mark's Hospital in Salt Lake City, Utah. He was 33.
A very caring person, Calvin befriended many people,
maintaining numerous relationships through e-mail. Many of those who were
unable to move about freely looked to him as a "window to the
world."
Calvin was also very creative. He enjoyed making his own
cards and invitations and spent many hours making videos and burning
compact discs. He had hoped to one day to own his own production studio.
Calvin worked as the Bilingual Heritage Coordinator at
Whitehorse High School. He will be greatly missed by the faculty and
students.
Surviving Calvin are his mother, Betty Joe of Aneth;
father, Willie Joe of Chilchinbeto, Ariz.; his two sisters, Brenda
(Lorenzo) Benally of Aneth, and Lorenda Joe of Shiprock N.M.; and his
paternal grandmother, Nellie Joe Begay of Chilchinbeto, Ariz. Numerous
nieces, nephews, and friends also survive Calvin.
He was preceded in death by his grandmother, Pauline
Lee; and grandfather, Charlie Lee.
Many friends and family members will dearly miss him.

Pomona "Mona" Marvine Lawson
Funeral services for Pamona Marvine "Mona"
Lawson will be held at 2 p.m., Wednesday, Jan. 23, at the Mancos First
United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery.
Reverend Ora Daily will be officiating. A visitation has been scheduled for
noon Wednesday at the church.
Mona was born to Milton Sherman and Florence May (Sheek)
Roberts on Oct. 2, 1922 in Mancos. She passed away on Wednesday, Jan. 16,
2002 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home. She was 79.
During Mona's younger years, she worked for the Mancos
Match Factory where she was as a chemist. It was her job to make sure there
was enough of the white section on the match.
For 50 years, Mona was a member of the Order of the
Eastern Star. Later she and her third husband, Mark Lawson, moved to the
Salt Lake City, area where they lived for a number of years.
Upon her return to the area, Mona remained a devoted
member of the Mancos First United Methodist Church.
Her son, Johnny Gerbitz; granddaughter, Julie M. Gerbitz;
and grandson, Jeff (Jane) Gerbitz survive her.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her brother,
Herbert M. Roberts; her daughter, Mildred May Lawson; her first husband,
John W. Gerbitz; and her third husband, Mark F. Lawson.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Frances Wall
Services for Francis Marie Wall, a lifelong resident of
Towaoc, will be held at 10 a.m. today, Jan. 19, at the Towaoc Recreation
Center. Raymond Sells will officiate. Interment will follow at the Towaoc
Cemetery. A dinner will then be held at the Ute Mountain Casino.
Francis Marie Wall was born to Joe and Sara Ute House
Wall on April 1, 9126, at Cottonwood Wash (Hatch Trading Post), Utah. She
passed away Jan. 16, 2002, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 75.
Mrs. Wall was very active and attended the Pentecostal
Church in Towaoc. She was an artisan who created beautiful beaded items and
woven baskets. She also made cradle boards, and gave each of her children
one. She was very interested ii promoting the Ute tradition, and attended
ceremonies and events such as the hand games and the Sun Dance and Bear
Dance ceremonies, along with pow-wows.
Francis Wall is survived by her children, Ernest House
Sr.; Pastor Davis Badback, Angelia Badback, Gloria Tom, Vernita Kay Tom and
Rosalina Tom, all of Towaoc; brothers, Alfred Wall St. and Paul Ute, both
of Towaoc; sister, Eva Wall Colorow of Towaoc, and numerous other relatives
from the Ute Mountain Ute Tribe and Southern and Northern Ute tribes, along
with many friends.

Thelma V. McKinley
Thelma Vanera McKinley, a lifelong resident of this area
passed away at her home in rural Dolores on Monday, Jan. 14, 2002, at the
age of 81. She was born in Hobart, Okla., the daughter of Charles R. and
Rachael (Sigfried) Ivie on May 12, 1920.
Thelma loved to read and was an avid outdoors person. She
enjoyed camping, mountain scenery, and was a great swimmer. Thelma spent
her time as a devoted homemaker. She was a fabulous cook of "health
foods" long before it was popular.
Surviving Thelma are her children, Patricia (Clinton)
Medley of Cahone, Mona (Johnnie) Samora of Mancos, Frank L. (Carol)
McKinley of Wisconsin, and Robert I. (Ericka) McKinley of El Paso, Texas;
a10 grandchildren, 13 great-grandchildren, and three great-great
grandchildren.
She is also survived by her brother, James Ivie of
Alamogordo, N.M., and her sister-in-law, Barbara McKinley of Cortez.
Her husband, Frank Ralph McKinley; and two sons, Howard
Junior Myers in 1941, and Michael James McKinley in 1999, preceded Thelma
in death.
Private family services will be held at a later date.

Harley Dale Graves
Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Harley
Dale Graves will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Jan. 16, at the Ertel
Memorial Chapel. Marvin Graves will officiate. Interment will follow at the
Cortez Cemetery. Military graveside services will be conducted by the Ute
Mountain American Legion Post #75.
Harley was born to Fred Hardey and Ina Madora (Sughurt)
Graves on Sept. 27, 1911, in Alexander, Neb. He passed away at his home in
Cortez on Thursday, Jan. 10, 2002, at the age of 90.
On June 8, 1936 in Cortez, Harley took Ida Marie Gregory
to be his bride and lifelong companion. Harley and Marie shared 65 years of
marriage.
Harley spent 26 years working for Empire Electric as an
equipment operator. Harley was an avid hunter and fisherman and was a
member of the Foursquare Church.
Surviving Harley are his beloved wife, Marie of Cortez;
his son and daughter-in-law, Harold and Donna Graves also of Cortez; and
five grandchildren and eleven great-grandchildren. His sister, Madge
McMillan of Farmington, N.M.; and sister-in-law Vyla Belle and husband,
Clark of Arlington, Texas, as well as numerous nieces and nephews also
survive Harley.

Leon Cassady
Funeral services for Leon Cassady, a longtime Pleasant
View resident will be held at 2 p.m., Tuesday, Jan. 15, at the Ertel
Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Fairview Cemetery in Yellow
Jacket.
Leon was born on March 22, 1904, in Covington, Okla. to
Edward and Eliza (Corbin) Cassady. He passed away on Thursday, Jan. 10,
2002, at Southwest Memorial Hospital. He was 97.
On March 21, 1940 Leon married his sweetheart, Flossie
Brazle. Leon was always a hard worker. He worked as an oil driller and gold
miner for the Silverton Mines for a time, but primarily worked as a farmer.
Leon drove his John Deere tractor up until one year ago.
His wife, Flossie; and his daughter and son-in-law,
Cubazell and John Omohundro, survive him. Two grandsons, Jeffrey Wilmarth
and Dan Wilmarth, and one great-granddaughter also survive Leon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and one sister.
Ezma Anona Weatherly
Ezma Anona Weatherly was born to Charles and Etta Belle
(Booco) Terrell on Jan. 27, 1905, in Minturn, Colo. She ,passed away on
Friday, Jan. 11, 2002 at the Vista Grande Nursing Home. She was 96.
Ezma married her beloved Guy Elroy Weatherly on August
10, 1923 in Minturn. To this union six children were born. Ezma was a
dedicated homemaker who became known as "Grammie" to her family.
She always showed patience and love toward her family, and dearly cherished
her grandbabies.
Ezma's children, Eileen Milstein of Guffy, Colo.; Bill
and Tinie Weatherly, Richard and Barbara Weatherly, Edward and Darlene
Weatherly, all of Cortez, and Kay and Dolores Weatherly of Rifle, Colo.
survive her. She also leaves 15 grandchildren, and 13 great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents; husband;
daughter, Edith Weatherly; and four brothers and three sisters.
There will be a private family service held at a later
date.

Saundra "Sandy" Sue Jackson
Graveside services for longtime Cortez resident Saundra
"Sandy" Sue Jackson will be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Jan. 14, at
the Cortez Cemetery.
Sandy was born to Roy Everett and Gertrude (Burner)
Moore on June 22, 1939 in Latham, Kan. She passed away on Thursday, Jan.
10, 2002, at the Golden Years Retirement Home in Cortez. She was 62.
Having a passion for the arts, Sandy loved to paint. She
also possessed a deep appreciation for music and played the guitar and
sang.
Sandy's children, Clint (Gale) Walker, Wes Walker, and
Brent Walker, all of Cortez, survive her. She also leaves seven
grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents and one sister,
Mary Lou Holaday.
Memorial contributions can be made in Sandy's memory with Hospice of

Nora Bancroft Mills
Funeral services for Nora Bancroft Mills, a lifelong
resident of Towaoc will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 12, at St.
Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at the Towaoc
Cemetery. A visitation has been scheduled for Friday afternoon at the Ertel
Memorial Chapel from1 to 5 p.m.
Nora was born on Sept. 29, 1939 in Towaoc to Harry Mills
and Lizzie (Spencer) Bancroft. She passed away on Tuesday, Jan. 8, 2002 at
Southwest Memorial Hospital. She was 62.
Nora enjoyed making things with her hands such as
embroidery, crocheting doing beadwork and putting puzzles together. She
also had a true green thumb and took pleasure in gardening. Reading mystery
books was also a favorite pastime for Nora.
She is survived by her husband, Joe Manuel Martinez of
Towaoc; her children, Jeffery Whiteskunk, Willa (Alvin Weeks) Whiteskunk,
Avery (Beverly) Whiteskunk, Selwyn (Loia) Whiteskunk, Valentina (George)
Begay, and Rupert (Joselina) Whiteskunk all of Towaoc. Nora's siblings,
Wilbert (Florence) Mills of Ft. Duchesne, Utah, Norton (Velma) Mills Sr.,
Raymond (Donna) Tom, Marjorie (Jesus) Soto, and Helen Munoz all of Towaoc
also survive her.
She leaves behind 22 grandchildren, many other relatives
and a lot of friends. Preceding Nora in death are her parents, her sister,
Emily Tom and her brother, Miles Mills.

Victor Ernest Watts
Funeral services for Victor Ernest Watts, a lifelong
resident of Towaoc will be held at 10 a.m., Monday, Jan. 7 at Margaret Mary
Catholic Church in Cortez. Interment will follow at the Towaoc Cemetery,
with a dinner to be held after, at 3 p.m., at the Dining Hall.
Visitation has been set for 6 p.m., Sunday, with prayer
services to follow at 7.
Victor was born on Feb. 5, 1953 to Wilford Watts and
Maude Washington in Durango. He passed away on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002 at
SouthwestMemorial Hospital. He was 48 years old.
He lived most of his life in Towaoc and during his
school years, he lived and attended schools in Ignacio, Colo., San Diego,
Calif., and Buena Vista, Colo. On June 1, 1997 Victor married Jodilynn
Hulligan at The Chapel in Cortez. Together they resided in Towaoc.
Victor worked as program director for the Vocational
Rehabilitation program in Towaoc. He was also the instuctor for the DUI
classes. He was instrumental in helping tribal and community members attain
training for employment.
When he wasn't working, he enjoyed traveling. Being
around family and friends is what Victor loved the most.
Victor is survived by his wife, Jodilynn Watts of Towaoc;
his daughter, Melissa Watts (Gregory McCook) of Towaoc; mother, Maude
Washington of Towaoc; step-father, Rudy Alire of Buena Vista; sisters,
Michela (Dale) AmericanHorse of Towaoc, and Sandra Ortiz of Salt Lake City,
Utah; and numerous aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews and cousins.
He was preceded in death by his father, Wilford Watts;
his brothers, Wade Smith Watts, Calvin Lyle Watts, Duane Thomas Watts,
Alfred Alire, and Baby Alire; his daughter, Dorissa Watts; grandmothers,
Jesse Monte and Dolly Watts; and grandfathers, George Watts and Walter
Washington.
Services are under the direction of the Ertel Funeral Home.
Helen Montana Thomas
A memorial service for Helen Montana Denny Thomas will
be held at 10 a.m., Saturday, Jan. 5, at the Cortez Church of Christ.
Helen was born Aug. 29, 1908, in Jardine, Mont. She
passed away Jan. 1, 2002 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos, at the
age of 92.
She is survived by her children, James (Mabel) Thomas of
Eloy, Ariz., Art (Shirley) Thomas of Cortez, Lynne (Archer) Swank of
Casper, Wyo., Gerald (Shirley) Thomas of Eloy, Ariz., Gayle (Ed) McNutt of
Cortez, and Stanley (Jeanne) Thomas of Tucson, Ariz.; her siblings, Wayne
(Viola) Denny, Dorothy Roatcap, Willard (Agnes) Denny, Shirley (Jim) Hunt,
and Lawson (Lanore) Denny . Helen also leaves 15 grandchildren, 36
great-grandchildren, three great-great grandchildren, and many nieces,
nephews and friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Arthur and Grace (Palmer)
Denny; beloved husband, Glenn Clarence Thomas; children, Louise Thomas and
Glenn Thomas Jr.; three brothers, Tom Denny, Alec Denny, and Lee Denny; her
sister, Emma Denny Swank; two grandchildren, Rich Ruff, and Bryon Thomas
and her great-grandson, Luke McNutt.
Bessie Edith Hinton
Funeral services for Bessie Edith Hinton, a lifelong resident of this
area,
will be held on Thursday, Jan. 3, 2002, at the Church of Jesus Christ of
Latter-Day Saints in Cortez at 1:30 p.m. Interment will follow at the
Cortez
Cemetery.
Visitation has been scheduled for Wednesday afternoon at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel from 4 p.m. until 6 p.m.
Bessie was born to Henry and Mary Elizabeth (Murphy) Stiles on Jan. 15,
1908, in Beulah, Colo. She passed away on Saturday, Dec. 29, 2001 at the
Vista Grande Nursing Home in Cortez. Bessie was 93 years old.
On Aug. 5, 1926, in Cortez, Bessie became the bride of Rudy David Hinton.
Bessie worked throughout the years within the Cortez area, retiring in 1969
She loved being with her family and enjoyed walking and eating out.
Crocheting, gardening and going to church activities were all pastimes
Bessie took pleasure in.
She is survived by her children; Arveda Bruce, Harold (Freeda) Hinton, Dale
(LaVerne) Hinton, Jerry (Vonita) Hinton, Betty Risenhoover, Rick (Murna)
Hinton; and foster-son, Melvin Belveal. Two sisters, Dorothy Smith and Ruth
Mangel; and a sister-in-law, Alma Stiles, also survive Bessie.
She also leaves 24 grandchildren, 49 great-grandchildren, and 24
great-great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Bessie's
parents
and her beloved husband, Rudy, precede her in death.

Charles "Chuck" Gonzales
Funeral services for Charles Elasario "Chuck"
Gonzales, a former resident of
Mancos, will be held Wednesday, Jan. 2, 2002, at St. Rita's Catholic Church
at 10 a.m. Interment will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Father Kevin
Novack will officiate.
Rosary services have been set for Tuesday evening at the Ertel Memorial
Chapel at 6 p.m.
Chuck was born to Jake Felipe and Helen (Lujan) Gonzales in Monte Vista,
Colo., on Dec. 30, 1940. He passed away at his home in Kirtland, N.M., on
Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at the age of 60.
Chuck grew up in Mancos and in his early years was a barber. He loved being
outdoors fishing and hunting. His children, grandchildren and family were
his greatest treasure and he loved the time spent with them.
Surviving Chuck is his mother, Helen Gonzales of Mancos; his children,
Margaret (Tom) Maestas of Mancos, Charles M. (Marquita) Gonzales Jr. of
Bayfield, Colo., and Jennifer (Isais) Lopez of Durango, Colo.; and his
seven
grandchildren, Brian and Stephanie Maestas of Mancos, Tristan and Kyra
Gonzales of Bayfield, and Taylor, Teagan, and Tarynn Lopez of Durango.
He also leaves behind his brothers and sisters, Fred Gonzales of Oxford,
Colo., Don Gonzales of Mancos, Gerald Gonzales of Farmington, N.M., Vera
Cardenas of Aztec, N.M., Dorothy Lopez of Cortez, and Rae Leon of Mancos.
He was preceded in death by his sister, Marie Gonzales; and brothers, Jake
Gonzales Jr. and Joe Gonzales.

Owen F. Burnham
Word was received on Dec. 30, 2001, that Owen F. Burnham
had passed away at
his home in Hayward, Calif. Services are pending. Burnham was born and
raised in Mancos.
Genevieve Eppich
Funeral services for Genevieve Eppich will be held at 10
a.m., Monday, Dec. 31, at St. Rita's Catholic Church in Mancos. Interment
will follow at the Cedar Grove Cemetery. Rosary services will be Sunday at
6 p.m., also at St. Rita's.
Genevieve was born on Dec. 24, 1919, in Thompson Park,
Colo., to Frank and Florence (Jones-Mahan) Sponsel. She passed away on
Thursday, Dec. 27, 2001, at her home in Thompson Park. She was 82.
She was a third-generation rancher whose family
homesteaded the ranch that has been in their family for 114 years.
Genevieve is survived by her children, Mary Rita
(Robert) Simmons of Lamar, Colo., Helen (Mark) Cernich of Phoenix, Ariz.,
Pauline (Les) Moody of Windsor, Colo., Tom Eppich of Thompson Park, Colo.,
Linda (Dan) Archibeque of Mancos, Theresa (Davin) Montoya of Hesperus,
Colo., and Gary (Kathy) Eppich of Stafford, Va.
She also leaves seven granddaughters, seven grandsons,
and two great-granddaughters. Four sisters and three brothers also survive
Genevieve.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George, son
Joseph, grandson Dustin Eppich, and sister Ruth Bartel.
Memorial contributions can be made with St. Rita's
Catholic Church.

Michelle (Phillips) Lucero
Michelle (Phillips) Lucero, daughter of Mr. and Mrs.
Jerald Paulson and the late George "Bill" Phillips, passed away
as the result of an automobile accident on Dec. 26, 2001, in Santa Fe, N.M.
Michelle was born in Cortez. Survivors include her
mother and stepfather; husband; daughter, Rachel; sister, Jeanette
(Phillips) Schnell and her family, and many friends.
A memorial fund has been set up in Michelle’s name,
partly to benefit her husband and daughter, who were injured in the same
accident.
Donations may be made at both the Cortez and Dolores
branches of the Dolores State Bank.
