FARMINGTON — The Panther girls got a good workout with nearly everyone on the team making a personal best or at least a season best time on Saturday, Dec. 15, at the Piedra Vista Invitational at the Farmington Aqua Center.

Farmington High School won the invitational on the girls’s side with 154 points. St. Michael’s High of Santa Fe came in second with 125. Durango took third with 112 while Piedra Vista finished fourth at 98 and Montezuma-Cortez High School fifth with 64.

"Overall, hey, it was a good meet," MCHS head girls swim coach Mark Knox remarked. "We had almost everyone doing personal records or season bests. When look at it that way, then it was a good meet."

The Panthers had several outstanding finishes on the day. The most noteable was Lindsey Maez. She dropped her time significantly in the 100 breast stroke. She touched the wall in second place with a time of 1 minute, 18.82 seconds. She finished sixth in the 200 individual medley in 2:48.28.

Amy Greene also dropped her time significantly in the 100 breast by finishing fourth with a 1:21.

"That event was my biggest surprise on the day. Where did those girls get that fly? That was great and it certainly was a hallmark event," he said.

Knox was pleased with Tessa Haukeness. She finished in fifth in the 100 back stroke in 1:20.39. Tracy Berhost placed ninth and Linda Smart 11th in that event. That was not one of her events. Knox put her in because several of his swimmers were not at the meet.

"To know she can swim that well in such a competitive meet is nice," he added.

Tamara Henry came in ninth in the 100 fly with a time of 1:25.54. Anna Newman came in 11th in 100 freestyle in 1:15.14. Jennifer Green came in 15th in that event.

Conny Berger came in eighth in the 50 free. Emilia Allee-Jumbo placed sixht in the 50 free. Jenna Dillon came in 13th in the 200 free. Allee-Jumbo also placed 10th in the 500 free in 7:50.34.

The Panther 200 medley relay team of Smart, Newman, Henry, and Allee-Jumbo finished in eighth. The Panthers’ 400 free relay squad of Haukeness, Berger, Allee-Jumbo, and Berhost came in seventh. The other 400 free relay team of Dillon, Jennifer Greene, Whitney Cook-Carnahan, and Piedra Lightfoot placed eighth.

Durango split its squad Saturday, with five swimmers going to Fort Collins for a coaches’ invitational meet and the rest of the team heading to Farmington for the Piedra Vista Invitational. No MCHS swimmers went to CIs this year.

At the Piedra Vista Invitational in Farmington, Christen Irby won one race and placed second in another to help Durango to third place among five teams.

"We will work three days this week and then take off for the holidays. We will hold open pool for those who want to workout on their own. We will starting practices again on Jan. 2," Knox said.
