November 24, 2001 STAFF REPORT Miranda Ernst, a former Dolores County High School standout distance track runner (she also ran cross-country her senior year for Montezuma-Cortez High School,) was named an NCAA Division II All-American in Women’s Cross-country. She is a standout performer for the University of Northern Colorado. Now a junior, Ernst finished 14th overall with a time of 22 minutes, 29 seconds over a 6-kilometer course in helping lead UNC to 11th place at the recently-held NCAA Division II Women’s Cross-country Championships at Slippery Rock, Pa. For her effort, she earned the title of All-American. Incidentally, Western State won the national title with 46 points. Adams State finished second while University of California-Davis took third and North Dakota State finished fourth. She had qualified for nationals by placing fifth with a time of 22:24.20 at the North Central Regional in Omaha, Neb. Western State, Adams State, North Dakota, South Dakota, UNC, and North Dakota State rounded out the top six qualifying teams. Ernst will turn her attention to the Indoor Track season and then the regular track season. Last year, she finished 56th overall at the D-II NCAA Cross-country Championships in Pomona, Calif. She helped the Bears to a sixth-place finish. In track that season, she had a personal record of 4:34.07 for the 1,500. She also earned All-American honors in track last spring. In 1999, her first season at UNC, Ernst placed 26th overall in the D-II NCAA Cross-country Championships. Ernst was an all-around athlete for Dolores County High School. She won back-to-back titles in 1,600 and 3,200 in 1997 and 1998. She earned 10 letters for volleyball, basketball, and track (plus the letter at MCHS) at DCHS. She was a six-time All-State choice for track and field. She is majoring in kinesiology and sports science. She is the daughter of Mike and Laurie Ernst of Dove Creek. |
