First-ever BMX race draws 46 racers

TASHEENA CALVILLO (4) of Cortez captured third place in the seventh moto of the day in the 10 Intermediate Class during the first-ever Bicycle Motocross held Sunday at the new Cortez BMX Track.

The first-ever Bicycle Motocross was held in Cortez this past Sunday, Nov. 18. The new Cortez BMX Track, located near Parque de Vida off Empire Road, officially opened.

A total of 46 racers competed. Of those, 23 were new riders. About 100 spectators were on hand. The races didn’t off without a hitch, though, as the software was not operating correctly and the printer would not work. However, the weather cooperated as it was pleasant.

The Main Event top four placers in the 17-20 Cruiser Class were first, "Psycho" Jason Ulibarri of Aztec, N.M.’ second, Kyle "The Dominator" Galyon of Cortez; third, Matt Lamb of Aztec; and fourth Bradley "The Bullet" Hardin of Aztec. Dana Galyon, who was racing for the first time, did not qualify.

The Main for the 36-40 Cruiser Class were Brian Calvillo of Cortez, Keith Evans of Cortez, and Kent Galyon of Cortez. Michael Kop did not qualify for the Main. All four riders in this class were racing for the first time.

Durango’s Ashley "The Grinder" Grubb took first place in the 36-30 Girl Cruiser Class. "Chit Chatin" Chelsey Galyon of Cortez grabbed second, and Kim Fairley of Cortez came in third.

The 6 Novice Class was interesting. Devon Graffis of Cortez captured first, Derrick Porter of Cortez crossed in second, Austin O’Kelly of Aztec placed third and Eli Lamb of Aztec came in fourth. First-time racer Aaron McClain did not qualify for the Main.

Aztec racers dominated the 6 Intermediate Class. Mitchell Reid crossed the finish line first, Jacey "The Jet" Cave was next and "Boppin" Bonnie Reid took third. Again in the 7 Expert Class, Aztec riders took the top three places as "Smokin" Logan Burkett crossed in first, Bradley "The Bullet" Hardin followed next, and Cody Rhinerson took third. Another new racer, Stetson Hurst, didn’t transfer to the Main.

Cortez was well represented in the 10 Intermediate Class. Chelsey Galyon won the event while Eli Tomac of McElmo Canyon came in second and Tasheena Calvillo third.

Area riders did well in the 12 Novice Class. Jace Weber of Lewis finished ahead of the field. Rafe O’Brien of Cortez crossed in second, while Logan Riffey of Dolores grabbed third and Will Rainer of Cortez finished fourth. New racer Charlie Evans didn’t transfer to the Main. All riders were racing for the first time. The 14 Novice Class also had area riders doing well. Brett Bergstrom of Dolores took first, Benjamin Britton of Cortez came in second, Talon Rosenkrance of Dolores grabbed third, and Ryan Williams of Dolores finished fourth. New racer Ty McClain didn’t qualify for the Main. This class also had all new racers.

Cortez riders dominated the first three places of the 14 Intermediate Class. Kyle "The Dominator’ Galyon of Cortez ran the race and finished first, Riley Calvillo of Cortez took second, and Bryan Kop of Cortez finished third. Durango’s Ashley Grubb placed fourth. "Chillin" Chad Tenski didn’t transfer to the Main.

The 19-27 Novice Class saw Aztec’s "Pyscho J" Jason Ulibarri capture first, Brandon Eubanks of Cortez placed second, and Cody Dennison of Cortez took third. Jeremy Galyon of Cortez crashed and didn’t transfer to the Main.
