November 15, 2001 BY JIM THOMAS The Southwest League Volleyball All-Conference selections were announced today, Nov. 15 and it comes as no surprise that two Montezuma-Cortez High School girls made the First Team. Senior Casey Bauer was the leading vote-getter. Bauer inked a Division I NCAA National Letter of Intent Wednesday morning, Nov. 14, to play for Colorado State University of the Mountain West Conference (see related story). Joining her on that elite team is the only junior, teammate Stefanie Allison. Others chosen to the First Team are seniors Erin Hutt of Montrose, senior Tori Sparks of Durango, senior Nikki Koloff of Central of Grand Junction, and senior Janel Sutton of Montrose. No Panthers were chosen to the Second Team. That squad is composed of senior Melissa Jessup of Grand Junction High School, senior Sarah Faber of Fruita-Monument, junior Sara Welch of Central, senior Blair Murphy of Durango, junior Sara Klippert of Montrose, and junior Carlee Kulovitz of Durango. One Panther is on the Honorable Mention Team. Senior Colette Hall of MCHS is on the list. She is joined by senior Kara Olsen of Grand Junction High, senior Kelly Moore of Fruita-Monument, junior Stacey Vogel of Central, senior Chelsea Crider of Fruita, and senior Kim Long of Montrose. It also comes as no surprise that Lindy Mortensen was chosen Coach of the Year. All Mortensen did was lead the Panthers to a 10-0 SWL record and a sparkling 28-3 overall record. The Panthers won the District VII title for the third straight year and won a second straight Region D championship. Cortez, the top seed in the Class 4A State Tournament this year, won its first two games in pool play — beating Glenwood Springs and Brighton — before falling to its old nemesis Mullen in the last game of pool play on Friday, Nov. 9, and then losing to perennially strong and eventual state-runner up Fort Morgan in the cross-bracketed semi-finals on Saturday, Nov. 10, in the Denver Coliseum. |
