The U-16 Pink Panthers closed out their Western Slope State League season with a win at home Saturday against Montrose U-16. The final score was Panthers 6, Montrose 2. The Panthers played this game with only 13 players as regional volleyball teams took several players with them.

Brin Andrews opened the scoring in the 12-minute mark with a nice individual effort, bouncing a hard left footed shot off Montrose's goalie and into the net. In the 23rd minute, Katie Meyer place a pretty crossing pass by the Montrose goalie for a easy knock in for Amanda Graffis. That ended the first half scoring at 2-0.

In the second half, the Panthers scored in the 45th minute as Graffis drove on the Montrose goalie and shot with the ball deflecting off Montrose right into the path of a hustling Andrews who tapped in the goal to make it 3-0 Cortez. In the 55th minute Graffis again charge the Montrose goal with the ball and the shot deflected off the Montrose Goalie, back off Graffis and into the net leaving the score 4-0 Panthers.

Montrose then came back in the 60th and 65th minute to score two goals making the game for interesting at 4-2. The panthers responded well to the late challenge by Montrose with a goal by Liz Powell as she beat to Montrose defenders to a well placed ball by Christine Brengle in the 69th minute of the game. Then in the 75th minute Graffis added her third goal of the game on another crossing pass from Brengle to put the game out of reach at 6-2.

"This game was very fun to watch," Pink Panther head coach Marc Meyer said. "All the ladies where playing well. Amy Johnson, after spending the last three weeks with a sore ankle, had a awesome game on defense, seemingly all over the field in both the defensive mid and defensive center positions. Early in the first half when the score was still 1-0, Randa Olson missed a ball at the top of the penalty box and Johnson was there on the goal line for the kick out and save. That play seemed to really spark the ladies and there level of play really pick up after that, I knew at 1-0 we were going to score a lot of goals today. Randa had a busy game in goal coming out of the box numerous times to sweep/keep the ball as Montrose tried to play numerous long balls over the top of our defense. Darshina Benally, Jessie Love-Nichols, Esther Harclerode and Savanah Tanner all had solid defensive efforts."

The Pink Panthers finished the regular WSSL season with a unbeaten 9-0-1 record. They clinched there third straight WSSL title last weekend with a win over Basalt. The U-16 Western Slope State League includes teams from Tri-City, Basalt, Montrose, Eagle, Grand Mesa Fire Blue U-15 and Grand Mesa Fire Gold.
