Buckskin Network helps get messages to big game hunters

DENVER — The Buckskin Network is a unique program that involves law enforcement and news media in a cooperative effort to assist the public.

Through a network of participating news media and all Colorado law enforcement agencies, emergency messages are delivered to hunters in the field during big game seasons. The network will be in operation through Nov. 15.

With proper preparation, hunters can assist their families in notifying them if an emergency situation should arise at home. The hunter should leave complete vehicle information including license plate numbers, hunting locations and date of return. When plans are changed, the hunter should notify his family to update their agenda. Hunters should also ascertain which participating radio stations can be heard in their hunting area.

Hunters with emergencies at home will have their name and home town announced on commercial radio stations a minimum of three times daily. The times vary station to station, but are broadcast as close to 6 a.m., Noon, and 8 p.m. as possible. Newspapers will vary concerning the printing of the names from daily to weekly.

If a hunter hears his name and home town announced, they need to call the Colorado State Patrol in Craig to receive a detailed message. It is very important to cancel received messages so valuable air time can be conserved.
