DELTA AND RANGELY — Three Montezuma-Cortez High School girls qualified for this Saturday’s, Oct. 27, Class 4A State Cross-Country Championships which will be held on the campus at Kent-Denver. However, no Mancos harriers qualified.

Amanda Graffis came in fifth at District IX Cross-Country Meet at Delta’s Confluence Park last Saturday, Oct. 20. She had a time of 19 minutes, 43 seconds. Hannah Mortensen placed 17th with a 21:16 and Julie Christensen came in 25th with a 22:12. Others who ran but did not qualify were Chelsea Mortensen 27th in 22:48, and on the boys’ side Drew Webster finished in 27th in 18:20.

Two high schools — Montezuma-Cortez and Mancos — competed in their respective classification regional cross-country meets. The Blue Jays went to Rangely to run in the Class 3A Regionals

The Class 4A District IX Cross-Country Meet is hosted by Montrose but will be at Delta’s Confluence Park.

"This was a fast course. It was mainly flat. They ran on cinders on some trails which run throughout the park," MCHS head coach Amber Olson commented. "The girls were ready and they all ran a good race. They had good times. Most of them PR’d. I know Amanda had a personal record by more than a couple minutes. Chelsea and Drew missed qualifying for State by just two points."

Joining MCHS and Montrose were Delta, Battle Mountain, Glenwood Springs, Moffat County, Palisade, Rifle, and Steamboat Springs.

Moffat County, with four runners placing in the top six positions, ran away with the title in the girls division with 36 points. The Steamboat Springs Sailors were a distant second, with double the score of the champion Bulldogs. Montrose placed third in the meet with 78 points while Palisade finished in fourth place with 87 points.

Caroline Cretti of Glenwood Springs cruised to the individual title in the girls race, posting a winning time of 18:07, defeating Moffat County's Charlotte Steele by 31 seconds.

On the boys’ side, Glenwood Springs took three of the top seven places in the race to win the team title in a convincing manner with 38 points. The Montrose Indians were a distant second, scoring 63 points in the meet. Palisade placed third in the meet with 66 points. Moffat County placed fourth with a score of 76.

Glenwood Springs' Chas and Marco Salmen blitzed the field as they finished the race in first and second place with times of 15:40 and 15:42, respectively.

At Rangely on the boys’ side, Gunnison won with 11 points. Aspen came in second with a distant 55 while Olathe had 75 and Crested Butte 88. Those four teams all qualified for State this week, also at Kent-Denver. Hotchkiss just missed finishing with 92, followed by Meeker 93, Cedaredge 94, Mancos 104, and Alpine Christian 115.

On the girls’ side at Rangely, Alpine Christian won with 40. Aspen came in second with 43, Hotchkiss third with 45, and Crested Butte 53. Others were Gunnison at 53, Rangely 93, Mancos 108, and Meeker 114.

Individually for the Mancos boys, Preston Hennrich clocked in at 21st in 19:57, Levi Martinez finished 24th in 20:15, followed by Alan Cummings 28th in 20:39, Ian Mullikin 31st in 20:51, and Justin Wince 41st in 20:19. For the Mancos girls it was Deana Vegas finishing in 245th at 24:54, Aspen Hennrich 35th in 26:40, Karena Dunham 37th in 27:06, Cassandra Kennedy 29th in 29:27, and Dorothy Edgerton 42nd in 29:42.

"It was a good season," MHS head coach Tim Dunham said. "We had such a young team this year (Martinez for the boys and Dunham for the girls are the only seniors). We have a lot of boys and girls coming back. The boys just missed qualifying as a team by only 16 points. The girls brought their times down all season. Now some of them are having competitive times."
