Motocross racing comes to successful end of season

ROBERT YARBROUGH of Cortez grabs some air coming off a jump during the final motorcycle motocross races at the Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos. The racing season, sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and hosted by High Desert Racing, came to a close after a successful summer season.

What a great motorcycle motocross season at the Wild Wild Rest Track. More races were held. More and more riders competed. More and more and more spectators watched.

The races were sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association and sponsored by High Desert Racing.

Final races of the season were held last Sunday, Sept. 30.

In the 250cc Beginner Classification, several Cortez riders did well. Robert Yarbrough of Cortez came in second while Lance Simonson took third.

The 50A Class saw Corey Adams of Dolores place third, Cody Bowen of Mancos fourth, Jay Rainer of Cortez sixth, and Chance Johnson of Pleasant View seventh. In 50B, Devon Graffis of Cortez took second. Adam Nickerson of Dolores took fourth after starting in seventh in the 60A Class.

Several riders placed in the 60B Class. Eli Tomac of Cortez went wire to wire in taking first place. He was riding a KTM. Adams came in fourth, Tyler Underwood of Dolores took fifth, and Rainer ninth. Taylor Carlson of Cortez came in fourth in the 80C Class.

In the 125cc Novice Class, Justin Reed of Mancos came in fifth after finishing the first lap in seventh. Jesse Montoya of Hesperus finished in sixth. The 125cc Beginner saw Duston Russell of Dolores win easily on his Kawasaki. Jami Still of Cortez grabbed fourth and Travis Peters of Cortez took eighth.

Sean Boone of Dolores grabbed third in the 250 C Novice Class. Chili Gilmore of Cortez placed sixth.

Several area riders placed in the 80cc Beginner division. Chance Simonson of Cortez finished the first lap in second and ended the third lap in second. Cody Dennison of Cortez came in fourth. Craig Welch of Lewis followed. Will Rainer of Cortez grabbed eighth. Jarod Russell of Dolores took ninth and Nathan Hensley of Dolores finished in 17th in the large field.

Steve Olson of Mancos won the Vintage category on an ATK after going wire to wire. Ken Carlson of Cortez placed second. Jim Broersma of Mancos took third, Tony Petrosi of Cortez fourth, and Chris Hanson of Mancos fifth, and Ray McCarty of Mancos sixth.

Dayton Wilson of Mancos was the winner in the Mini Quads. He was riding a Suzuki. Tyrun Harris of Lewis grabbed third while Derek Porter of Cortez took fourth, Bowen Tucker of Cortez fifth, and Todd Underwood of Dolores sixth.

In the Open C Novice, Boone placed fifth and Justin Reed of Mancos took ninth. Lance Simonson took first on a Kwasaki while Yarbrough grabbed second in the Open CC Beginner. Scott Schmidlin of Cortez was the winner on his Yamaha as he went wire to wire in the Quads. Jimmy Wilson of Cortez took third, and Dustin Porter of Cortez sixth. Chance Simonson placed fifth and Dennison sixth in the Schoolboy division.

It was a good day for the local riders in the SuperMini 60 Class. Tomac took second, Nickerson seventh, and Tyler Underwood 11th in the large field. In SuperMini I, Welch finished in seventh. In SuperMini II, Will Rainer grabbed seventh, and Hensley 12th.
