Oct 6, 2001 STAFF REPORT GRAND JUNCTION — The Panthers will play Grand Junction High at 10 a.m. today, Oct. 6, their final Southwestern League boys soccer game of the season. That won’t be their last game as Montezuma-Cortez High School will visit nonconference foe Piedra Vista in Farmington on Oct. 18. The Panthers played at Fruita-Monument Friday afternoon, Oct. 5. The Wildcats defeated MCHS 7-0 back on Sept. 15 while the Tigers stopped Cortez 5-1 on Sept. 21. The Panthers, who have a 1-7-1 overall record, have been struggling lately. They took on Class 5A powerhouse Durango for two straight games and were blown out. Durango High School boys soccer shut out Cortez for a second straight game on Tuesday at Devin Hart Memorial Field this past Tuesday, Oct. 2, in Durango. The Demons defeated the Panthers 10-0. That came off a 9-0 win only four days earlier. MCHS took only two shots on goal with Demon goalie Shawn Kearny stopping both of those. Durango got two goals from Kyle Fredrick and another from Adam Beach. Zach Carpino netted a pair of goals and Bader Saoudi booted a second half hat-trick with goals in the 65th, 71st and 78th minutes. The DHS boys had their first easy win on Thursday, Sept. 27, by beating Cortez 9-0 at Norman Johnson Memorial Field. Fredrick, who is one of the top scorers in Class 5A, made a goal while Beach kicked in one goal. Carpino opened the game by scoring in the second minute of play. The Demons finished the first half with a 5-0 lead. The final five goals in the bank, but they wouldn’t be their last as they would score four more times. Beach scored all of those. |
