Gnas has 'good feeling' about contest

Gary Gnas of Dolores has been playing the National Football League Football Contest in the Cortez Journal for several years but has never won. This week, though, he finds his name at the top of the list.

After a week off the week before out of respect for the terrorist attacks in New York City and Washington, D.C., games resumed Sunday and Monday, Sept. 23-24.

"I don’t really look at the standings this early in the season," he said Wednesday morning when told he had won the $50 weekly prize. "But I did have a good feeling. I thought I had done reasonably well."

Gnas, who works for Alltell in Cortez, reported he first glances at the latest line (gaming odds).

"If there is a heavy favorite, I will usually pick that team. If a game looks to be toss-up, I look at home teams and total offense and total defense. Sometimes I just go with a hunch," he added.

Gnas said he picked an upset by Chicago over Minnesota because, "that’s a favorite team of mine, right behind the Broncos," he was quick to add.

Another week of NFL football is on tap and another contest is ready for someone to win. For the losers, their names will be thrown into a box and at the end of the season a name will be drawn for a consolation prize.
