September 18, 2001 STAFF REPORT The Panthers, the no. 3 ranked AAAA volleyball team in Colorado, continues to be impressive. They are coming off a 15-8, 15-6 win over Montrose and a 15-9, 15-5 victory over Central of Grand Junction in Southwestern League play. MCHS took on Montrose on the road Friday, Sept. 14, and came away with the win. Coach Lindy Mortensen reported the match was back and forth until the Panthers finally began pulling away at the 8-point mark. In the second game, the Panthers capitalized on the Indians’ mistakes. Mortensen reported the girls hit harder in the second game. "It was a pretty good match," she recalled. "Montrose has a good team." Casey Bauer made 15 kills and Stefanie Allison 14 for the match. Colette Hall had five blocks. Lindsay Wilson played steady, making 12 digs and three kills. The Panthers defeated the Warriors 15-9, 15-5 in straight sets. In the first game, Cortez made some unforced errors which bothered Mortensen. But in the second game, the Panthers dominated play and took control of the game early. Bauer made 15 kills and Allison 10. Sasha Yarbrough made five service aces. The Panthers will visit a very good Monument Valley High School team at Kayenta, Ariz., on Thursday, Sept. 20, in game that was changed from today. Monument Valley recently won the Farmington High School Invitational. Monument Valley has dominated its classification in Arizona. |
