Harrison wins CWGA Club Championship flight

SHELLY EARL LINES UP A PUTT on hole no. 9 on Tuesday morning during the first round of the annual Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Club Championship which was held at Conquistador Golf Course. Earl came in second place, only one stroke off the lead. Kristin Harrison, a student at Montezuma-Cortez High School, won the 36-hole Championship Flight.

Kristin Harrison, a student at Montezuma-Cortez High School, captured first place in the Championship Flight of the Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Club Championship held Tuesday and Wednesday, Sept. 11-2, at Conquistador Golf Course.

Harrison finished the 36-hole tournament with a 184 gross score. Shelly Earl came in second, only one stroke back. Fran Kirschenman placed third at 187. Taking first low net in the flight was Joanne Rodstrom with a 143. Moya Gray came in second at 145 and Shirley Hanson followed at 151.

Asalea Wright grabbed low gross first place with a 195 in the First Flight. Lenore Goode finished one shot back while Arlene Curtis was way back at 201. Dottie Banks took first low net with a 138. Donna Durrant and Fay Kautz tied at 145.

Eulalia Skinner won the Second Flight with a 202. Betty Underwood took second with a 204 while Mary Hetherington was back at 222. Pearl Smith won low net after shooting a 140. Ardy Ptolemy came in second at 144 and Bobby Ertel finished at 147.

Wiggins recorded a birdie on hole no. 3, Skinner on no. 3 and 12, Durant on no. 4, Shannon Suckla no. 10, and Rodstrom no. 14. Gobbles were made by Skinner on no. 3, Joyce Stonehacker no. 4, Durant no. 4, Wiggins no. 3, Kirschenman no. 4, Twila West and Shirley Hanson no. 7, Donna Suckla no. 5, Rodstrom no. 14, and Underwood no. 15.

The play this Tuesday, Sept. 18, will be "All Irons." Tee time is 9 a.m.

The Cortez Senior Men’s Championship will be held Sept. 22-23 and the Job’s Daughter’s Tournament will close the tournament schedule Sept. 29.

The dates for the 2001 36-hole Colorado Golf Association’s Medal Play Tournament will be Sept. 29-30 at Dalton Ranch Golf Club located in the Animas River Valley north of Durango.

Players representing Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona will play for some of the highest paying tournament stakes in the area. All players must have a current GHIN number and a USGA handicap. The tournament, sponsored by Touchstone Energy and the Durango Rotary Club, benefits the local chapter of the American Cancer Society and combines a Colorado Golf Association sanctioned event with social events and other fund-raising endeavors.
