Iron Horse Moto-Cross race ends motorcycle racing season

The final Motorcycle Moto-Cross of the season was held last Sunday, Sept. 2, at Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos. With the Iron Horse Motorcycle Rally being held at Ignacio, motorcycle riders from all over the Southwest participated.

Race organizer and host Ray McCarty reported there were "lots of Harleys as well as many other brands" represented. McCarty said it was the most-successful season to date as far as the number of riders and the number of fans.

The Iron Horse Rally Moto-Cross races saw many of the classifications filled with riders. A total of 167 rode their bikes.

In the 50A class, Corey Adams of Dolores placed fourth, Cody Bowen of Mancos came in fifth, Tyler Underwood of Dolores took sixth, and Chance Johnson of Pleasant View captured seventh. Devon Graffis and Terrence Yarbrough, both of Cortez, placed two-three, respectively, in the 50B class. In the 60A class, Adam Nickerson of Dolores captured second after finishing the second lap in third. In the 60B, Adams grabbed fifth and Chance Simonson of Cortez took seventh.

Nickerson also came in seventh in the Super Mini 60 class. He finished the first lap in sixth, dropped all the way ninth, and then worked his way back up and settled for seventh by the third go-round.

No local riders placed in the SuperMini I and no local riders placed in the SuperMini II.

In the 80cc Beginner, Simonson placed second. He made it around the first lap in first but dropped to second for the final two. Ryan Ledford of Pleasant View came in third after moving up from fourth. Craig Welch of Lewis grabbed fourth, Nathan Hensley of Dolores fifth, and Taylor Carlson of Cortez seventh. No local riders placed in the 80 B or 80 C.

In the 125cc Beginner, it was a different story as several local riders placed. Jami Still of Cortez captured first place after moving from second to first. Duston Russell of Dolores started in fourth, moved into first, but finished in third. Travis Peters of Cortez came in seventh. No local riders placed in 125 B Amateur.

The 125 C Novice saw Travis Olson of Mancos come in second after finishing the first lap in third. Justin Reed of Mancos moved up from sixth to seventh.

Two Mancos men placed one-two in the Vintage Class. Jim Broersma and Steve Olson were the top two while Walt Buckholtz of Dolores took third. Ken Carlson of Dolores and Tony Petrosi of Cortez placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Lance Simonson of Cortez went wire-to-wire on his Kawaski in the 250cc Beginner. Darin Howard of Pleasant View came in third, Robert Yarbrough of Cortez took fifth, and Kyle Duggan of Mancos captured seventh. Chili Gallimore of Cortez grabbed third in the 250 C Novice. No local riders placed in the 250 B Amateur. No local riders placed in the 250 A Pro as well. And no local riders placed in the Open Veteran.

In the Open C Novice division, Reed came in third. No local riders rode in Open B Amateur. But the locals did well in the Open CC Beginner. Still won the event on his Yamaha by finishing the first lap in first, the second in second, and then winning. Yarbrough went from third to first to second. Howard placed fourth.

The Quads race was filled with local riders. Jimmy Wilson of Cortez, riding a Yamaha, went from third to second to first. Scott Schmidlin of Cortez started rather erratically going from fifth to first and settling for third. Jake Allmon of Cortez came in eighth. In the Mini Quads, Dayton Wilson of Mancos won on his Suzuki while Derek Porter of Cortez finished in second.
