Motocross racing sees big rider, attendance increase

August 23, 2001

ALL-TERRAIN VEHICLES took some of the spotlight last weekend during Motocross Motorcycle racing at the Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos. For several years, the track has struggled to get interest from the ATV riders, but now three classes are needed. A total of 28 riders signed up for last week’s show.

Riders from as far away as Prescott, Ariz., and other places throughout the Four Corners participated in the Motocross Motorcycle races held Sunday, Aug. 19, at the Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos.

"We saw a record 219 riders signing in and the gate attendance was pushing 4,000," track operator Ray McCarty said. "Perfect track prep by Four Corners Materials and prior rain soaking made for the best motocross and ATV racing to date."

Motocross motorcycle racing, hosted by High Desert Racing and sanctioned by the American Motorcycle Association, is certainly becoming a fast growing sport.

"With all the business and community support we have received, this is being established as one of Southwestern Colorado’s larger monthly attended events and placing Montezuma County on many visitors maps as a motorcycle/ATV racing destination. With the nearby Iron Horse Rally close by and on the same weekend as our next race, Sept. 2, should see even more success."

Four years ago when the track got started, Quad racers were no where around. At this event, there were three classes of all-terrain vehicles and 28 riders racing.

Scott Schmidlin of Cortez, riding on a Yamaha, came in second after finishing the first lap in first, then dropping to third, and then coming back. Jimmy Wilson, on a Yamaha, started in fifth but improved to second before finishing third. Jerry Baker of Cortez came in fifth and Dustin Porter of Cortez grabbed eighth.
