Ute Mountain Oil Classic successful

August 16, 2001

STAFF REPORT

The Ute Mountain Oil Classic was held Aug. 4 at Conquistador Golf Course. The event is a non-profit golf tournament organized by volunteers affiliated with the oild and gas industry in the Four Corners region.

Proceeds from the event go to the Shriner’s Children Hospital in Salt Lake City.

The course, although very wet from previous days of rain, made for a challenging day of golfing for the morning flight. By the afternoon, the sum was shining and the course had dried out enough for some better conditions.

A steak dinner was held at the Cortez Elks Lodge that evening. Awards and door prizes were presented at that time.

A total of 36 teams enterd the four-man scramble 18-hole tournament. First through fourth place teams, cup to pin winners, longest driver winners and putting contest winners all received gift certificates to Conquistador Golf Course, presented by the Ute Mountain Oil Classic committee. The first-place team also received custom wood putters engraved with the Ute Mountain logo.

Capturing first place, won by a scorecard playoff, with a score of 12-under-par 60 were the team of Joe Keesee, Troy Mullis, Donna Suckla, and Ken King.

Coming in second, also with a score of 60, were Adrian Quintana, Randy Irvin, Kenny Irvin, and Matt Smith. Taking third with a 61 was the team of Don Higman, Rick Costanza, Arlene Curtis, and Ronda Higman. The fourth place finishers with a score of 62 included Randy Smith, Randy Curtis, W. Michael Boan, and Brett Hurlbut.

Closest to the pin for the morning group on hole no. 3 was Charlie Brannin and in the afternoon it was Stuart Stroud. The hole no. 12 winner was Rex Thompson (a.m.) and Ken Torres no. 16, tied were Randy Irvin and Jeff Sample, and no. 16 Tony Finch.

Longest drive winners in the women’s category on hole no. 2 was Sherrill Burton in the morning flight and Tonya Yates in the afternoon. Longest drive winners for the men’s on hole no. 17 were Marty Howell in the morning and Torres in the afternoon.

The putting contest winners were Lonnie Huff in the morning and a tiebreaker between Phil Duda and Randy Smith.

The big winner of the day was King of Farmington. He made a hole-in-one on no. 7 to win a 2002 Buick Rendezvous, presented by Steve Keetch Motors of Cortez.
