Jacobsen captures CMGA Club Championship with one-stoke win

Jack Jacobsen is the new Cortez Men’s Golf Association’s club champ.

Jacobsen, the new head golf coach at MCHS, defeated young Shea Sena, who will be a sophomore at Montezuma-Cortez High School this fall and plays on the varsity team, with a two-day total of 145 at Conquistador Golf Course. Sena had a 146. Jacobsen shot a first-day total of 1-over-par 73 on Saturday, July 21, and came back with even-par 72 on Sunday, July 22, in the Championship Flight. Sena fired a 74 the first day and shot 72 the next. Jacobsen took home $177 in gift certificates and Sena $106.62. Paul Schlafly fired a 76 the first day and dropped off to a 79 the second round for a 155. He pocketed $71.08.

Harold Ehnbom captured low net honors in the Championship Flight. He fired rounds of 69-69 for 138. Stuart Stroud shot 70-71-141 and Jim Guest 72-70-142. A total of 16 players participated in the flight.

Rick Keck won a playoff to take first low gross in the First Flight. He shot a 78 but struggled to an 89 for a 167. Juan Alvarez shot very steady 83-84-167 for second. Jim Buffington carded 81-90-171 for third gross. Chuck Rodstrom won low net by shooting 72-67-139. John Gray and Glenn Stewart shot identical 72-70-142 rounds to tie for second-third net. A total of 19 golfers played in the flight.

Steve Kennedy won the Second Flight low gross by firing 84-89-173. Sam Jarvis came in second, just one stroke back at 90-84-174. Brad Harrison placed third at 87-9-178. Taking low net honors in the flight was Scott Twilley with rounds of 65-66-131. Bruce White scored 69-63-132 and Dave Lortenzen and Richard Tokar tied for third as Lortenzen shot 68-70-138 and Tokar 71-67-138. There were 14 who played in the flight.

Richard Westerman easily won the Senior Flight. He shot 82-72-154. Tom Bryant came in a distant second with 79-80-159 while Jim Stephens carded 85-86-171. Larry Kautz won low net with a 68-69-137. Ralph Haynie and Paul Spitzer tied for second net with Haynie shooting 73-70-143 and Spitzer 67-76-143. A total of 14 competed in the flight.

The Cortez Women’s Golf Association will hold its annual President’s Cup (low net tourney) today, July 24, at Conquistador Golf Course.

Big, big tourneys will be held in August. The annual Ute Mountain Oil Classic will get things under way on Aug. 4. The Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is set for Aug. 14. The grandaddy of them all, the Pinto Bean Classic, will be held Aug. 18-19.

September may bring a nip to the air and leaf color changes, but it doesn’t mean golf season is over. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set for Sept. 8. The CWGA’s Club Championship is set for Sept. 11-12. The Nielson’s Invitational is slated Sept. 15. The Cortez Senior Championship will be held Sept. 22-23 and the Job’s Daughter’s Tournament will close the tournament schedule Sept. 29.
