July 12, 2001 The UCI Mountain Bike World Cup is coming to Durango July 13-15. Durango will be one of only four venues worldwide that will host all three disciplines: downhill, dual slalom and cross-country. The downhill, designed by Durango resident and former world champion Greg Herbold and current world champion as well as current Durango resident Myles Herbold, will take place directly beneath the resort’s new Purgatory Village Express "six-pac" and will give spectators a unique vantage point. It will be highlighted by Cliff Drop, Pinball Alley, Goliath Gelande and a 40-foot gap jump across the finish line. The dual will feature riders starting off side by side and eventually merging into a single track at the bottom. The cross-country, designed by 1990 world champion Ned Overend, starts and finishes at Fort Lewis College and will run in a clover-leaf pattern. Spectators are encouraged to buy the Booster Pack. The $20 pack includes a weekend credential, which acts as a lift pass for Thursday and Friday’s Downhill training, and Saturday’s Downhill and Duals, each $10 on their own, an official World Cup event sticker, plus a $5 parking pass. The pack also gives $3 off an official event T-shirt, discounts on food and drink, and a free kids T-shirt. You can purchase a Booster Pack at local Durango bike shops, or contact rdodge@durangomountain.com. Visit http://durangoherald.com/Wcup.html for more information. |
