July 7, 2001 Herald Staff Report The fire danger is moderate in most areas of Southwest Colorado, but caution is needed as rainfall for the season continues to fall below normal, fire officials say. There are a number of preventive measures visitors to the forest can take: Anyone responsible for starting a wildfire may be held responsible for the cost of putting it out and the damage caused. Check fire conditions before visiting an area and observe any restrictions that may be in effect. Fire restrictions are not in place on federal lands. Call the San Juan Public Lands Center, 385-1210, for more information. Don’t park cars or recreational vehicles on dry vegetation. The vehicle’s exhaust system can start a fire. Use an approved spark arrester on off-road vehicles and chain saws. Clear vegetation and debris within 10 feet of campfires. Have a bucket of water and shovel nearby in case a campfire gets out of control. Make sure campfires are out completely and cool to the touch before leaving. |
