The Ute Mountain High School Rodeo team has made Cortez proud. Colorado State High School Rodeo finals were held June 13-16 at Greeley. This is where it is determined who goes to National High School Rodeo Finals in Springfield, Ill., in July.

There were over 300 high-school contestants attending Greeley finals this year. Out of 17 teams throughout the state, Ute Mtn. Rodeo team was third overall in points at the finals. Wearing their team shirts, and joined by Basin High School Rodeo team of Durango, the Ute Mountain Rodeo team posted the colors and packed the National High School Rodeo Sponsor flags in the grand entry at the first performance of the rodeo.

First Performance: Sandy Tozer was 10.6 in the calf-roping, placing third, while Matt Betts was 20.4 and took 10th place. Jake Gordanier was 27 seconds in the steer-wrestling, which placed him seventh. Lindsey Maez was 17.951 and took fourth in the barrel race and 11.1 in the goat-tying, giving her third place. Brendee Bauer was 13.9 in the breakaway roping that took ninth place, 22.24 in the pole-bending taking 10th and 10th in the goat-tying at 19.3. Alyssa Redshaw was 15.9 in the goat-tying, placing her eighth. Jaime Ferguson had a score of 64, placing her fifth in the girls cutting and Lindsey Maez had 63 giving her sixth in the girls cutting.

Second Performance: Gordanier won the steer-wrestling with 5.0 seconds. Redshaw was a 10.9, making her third in the goats. Lacy Haygood was a 4.7 in the breakaway roping, placing sixth, and ran a 17.881 in the barrel race, placing ninth. Bauer had a pole-bending run of 20.933 that got her third and tied her goat in 14.2 getting seventh. Ferguson scored 67 in the girls’ cutting, taking third place, and Maez had 65 making her fifth in the girls cutting.

Out of the 10 who attended state finals, seven of our team went back for the short go, which is the top 15 in each event: Tozer in calf-roping, Gordanier in steer-wrestling, Hunter in the goat-tying, Haygood in the breakaway roping, Bauer in pole-bending and breakaway roping, Maez in pole-bending and girls’ cutting, Ferguson in the cutting.

When it was all over, we had Tozer, Gordanier, Maez and Ferguson qualifying to go to National Silver State Finals in Falon, Nev., which takes fifth through 10th-place holders of each event. Regardless of the hot, hot days, the rain by the buckets and the humidity that could be cut with a knife, the early, early mornings, and the late, late nights, a good time was had by all.

The Ute Mountain High School Rodeo team would like to take this opportunity to thank the Montezuma-Cortez School District and board for their support. Also, the community businesses and individuals who buy ads in our Rodeo programs and help sponsor our Cortez High School rodeos. It helps us to put on our two rodeos every year and makes it possible for us to travel throughout the state to compete in the sport of rodeo. Bob and Robin Bragg with AG EXPO for letting us have the concessions at the AG EXPO, as this money is used to go to state finals.

We’d like to thank Janet and Lenard Maez with Maez Ranches for sponsoring our team shirts and also going at midnight to laundry them, being joined by Grandma Moetta Bauer, who also saw to it that they were all ironed up again so we would look sharp for our pictures. At last, a big thanks to all the Dads, Moms, Grandparents, families and friends who are always there giving their time and support to keep us going, win or lose. Now we will rest a little so we will be ready to start the new season off here in Cortez with our own three-day rodeo over Labor Day weekend. Come out and support your youth in rodeo and see them compete at state levels.
