New fishing regulations announced

July 3, 2001

Although runoff is finished, precipitation over the past few days has brought some rivers up slightly. Flows statewide are generally below the multi-year average, so most are now open for wading. Many high lakes up to 12,000 feet are also open.

The Division of Wildlife has several 24-hour-a-day recordings available to provide the latest in fishing condition reports and stocking information. For up-to-date information, phone 303-291-7534.

Please be advised that the Wildlife Commission approved the new fishing regulations that went into effect Jan. 1. The new regulations are as follows:

The statewide bag limit for trout will be four fish per day, with an eight-fish possession limit. There are still a number of streams on the West Slope that will continue to have a two-fish limit. Be sure to check individual water listings.

The kokanee bag limit will be 10, including for snagging.

The minimum size limit for tiger muskie has been increased from 30 inches to 36 inches.

The bag limit has been removed for northern pike. (There are four lakes that have a restriction that no more than one northern pike taken per day can be over 34 inches. These lakes are Barr Lake, Crawford Reservoir, Cheesman Reservoir and Rio Blanco Reservoir.

The new 2001 fishing brochure is now available at all DOW area offices and licenses agents.
