DARE softball successful

June 30, 2001

The annual Drug Abuse Resistence Education (DARE) All-Night Softball Tournament was held at June 22-23 at the Cortez City Softball Complex.

This tournament, co-sponsored by the City of Cortez Parks and Recreation Department, featured 15 teams from all around the Four Corners area. The teams had to survive four games during all-night play and move into a single-elimination bracket to finalize the winners and placings. "Survival of the Fittest" proved to a valuable phrase for most of the teams.

The tourney raised $1,400 for the local Cortez Friends of DARE. This money will be used to buy books and supplies for area students involved in the DARE program. Without the help of community involvement, this tournament would not be successful.

The top finishers in the men’s division were: first place, I.B. Pro-Fans from Cortez; second, Big Sur from Ignacio; and third, Citizens State Bank of Cortez. In the women’s division, the top placers were: Roadrunners from Farmington; Gordy’s Restaurant from Cortez; and Static from Farmington.

Additional sponsors for the event were: Mike Green, ABC RV Sales, Rent-All Rentals, Southwest Auto Center, and Cortez Friends of DARE.
