June 26, 2001 BY JIM THOMAS The men hit the course this past Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, at Conquistador Golf Course. The Cortez Men’s Golf Association held its annual Two-Man Best Ball Tournament. Shea Sena and Craig Liukko captured Championship Flight honors low gross with two-round scores of 67-67-134. Pat Gordon and Lou Knight took second gross way back at 73-70-143. The team of Scott Pierce and Stuart Stroud took first low net with 63-63-126 and Juan Nakai-Tsosie-Tom Bryant captured second net at 61-66-127. A total of 11 teams played in the flight. Taking First Flight low gross was the duo of Bill Boles and Allan Ranta with 74-79-153. Jim Buffington and Michael Mulligan grabbed first low net at 64-64-128 while Ken Torres-Don Higman came in second at 68-62-130. A total of nine teams played in the flight. Jim Goode and Gary Garner came out on top for low gross in the Second Flight with rounds of 81-76-157. Doug Loyd-Richard Tokar won low net honors with 61-57-118 while Glenn Stewart and Marlin Wittwer came in second at 60-61-121. There were 10 teams playing. Ken Williamson and partner Star Proffitt captured low gross in the Third Flight with rounds of 78-80-158. Larry Smiley and James Baird won low net at 59-64-123. Clayton Melby and Bryson McCabe took second net at 59-65-124. A total of 10 teams played. The CMGA will hold a meeting on Monday, July 2, at 6:30 p.m. at the Cortez Elks Lodge. All members are urged to attend. For details, phone Fred DeWitt at 882-4904. The annual Cortez Junior Golf Classic was held on June 21. Sena of Cortez, also played in the Junior tourney and he shot 4-over-par 76 for 18 holes to win the Boys 15-17 age bracket. Keenan Lovett of Cortez fired an 82 while Ryan Franklin (hometown unknown) shot 85. In the Boys 13-14 division, Keenan Holt (hometown unknown) and Dan Parkinson of Durango tied with an 88 while Jamie Eads of Cortez came in with an 89. Michael Gunn of Durango won the Boys 11-12 division with a nine-hole round of 51. Kyle Harriman of Cortez fired a 56 and Randy Wright of Cortez 58. Brian Grubbs of Cortez shot a 27 for five holes (played 150 yards out) while Dominique Johnson of Cortez carded a 29 and Jack Greene of Cortez 30. Three Durango girls dominated play in the Girls 15-17 division. Erin Parkinson won with an 85, Tessa Canzona shot 88, and Ricinda Winn 94. In Girls 13-14 bracket, Mallory Knelller of Durango carded a 106, Courtney Gunn of Durango finished two shots back at 108 and Jennifer Pierce of Cortez came in with a 163. In the Girls 6-10 age group, Dara Blackmore fired a 23 for five holes (150 yards out), Swayzee Threlkeld of Cortez 26, and Jackie Ramsey of Cortez 29. In the Girls 11-2 bracket, Cara Wallace, Ginnie Hill, and Cheyanne Dennison, all of Cortez, played three holes but did not score. Leland Sieb of Cortez scored a hole-in-one on 210-yard hole no. 3 at Conquistador Golf Course recently. He used a 5-wood and struck a Dunlap Total Performance golf ball. Witnessing was Marvin Lynchard of Salt Lake City. There will be no play on July 2 for the Twilight League players. The league will be extended another week. The last day of the summer golf league is July 16 with an awards dinner to follow. The Cortez Elks Lodge No. 1789 will be hosting its second annual Three-Person Charity Scramble July 14-15. The entry fee is $100 per person which includes green fees, cart, two rounds of golf, and banquet. At least one player per team must be an active Elk. The field is being limited to the first 36 teams which sign up. For more details, phone 565-3557. The annual local qualifying for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship will be held at hole no. 18 at 5 p.m. July 6. Conquistador will be the only qualifying site in the Four Corners. Signup is in the Pro Shop. July has several major events on the books. The Coors Light Firecracker Tournament is set for July 7-8. The CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) is slated for July 24. The CMGA Men’s Club Championship will be held July 21-22. Big, big tourneys will be held in August. The annual Ute Mountain Oil Classic will get things under way on Aug. 4. The Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is set for Aug. 14. The grandaddy of them, the Pinto Bean Classic, will be held Aug. 18-19. September may bring a nip to the air and leaf color changes, but it doesn’t mean golf season is over. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set for Sept. 8. The CWGA’s Club Championship is set for Sept. 11-12. The Nielson’s Invitational is slated Sept. 15. The Cortez Senior Championship will be held Sept. 22-23 and the Job’s Daughter’s Tournament will close the tournament schedule Sept. 29. Firm dates have been scheduled for the CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) on June 24 and their club championship Sept. 11-12. These are only the major tournaments on the block. That does not mean there won’t be some organizations won’t schedule some fund-raisers or scrambles throughout the summer. |
