June 23, 2001 STAFF REPORT BOULDER — Three Cortez runners competed recently in the Celestial Seasonings Bold Boulder 10-Kilometer Run, one of the largest road running races in the world. Doug Bagge had an official time of 42 minutes, 25 seconds to finish among the top racers. He was joined by Joe Keesee who finished in 1 hour, 1 minute, 54 seconds. Mary Keesee was clocked in 1:22:41. This past year, more than 41,000 runners, walkers, and wheelchair racers from all across the country and from around the world, traveled to Boulder to compete in the Memorial Day event. Participants ranged in age from 6-92. Everyone who finished the race received an official Bolder Boulder finisher’s certificate. The top 10 finishers in every category, both male and female, received a Bolder Boulder medal. The race started at the north end of 30th Street in Boulder, winding through various neighborhoods before finishing at the University of Colorado’s Folsom Field in front of some 50,000 spectators. After the race, the runners stayed in the stadium for the Memorial Day Tribute, the largest of its kind. The event has raised more than $900,000 for local charities such as the Boulder Humane Society. The economic impact on the city is estimated at $10 million. |
