June 21, 2001 By Jim Thomas Journal Sports Editor The men will hit the course this Saturday and Sunday, June 23-24, at Conquistador Golf Course. The Cortez Men’s Golf Association is presenting its annual Two-Man Best Ball Tournament. The entry fee is $60 per team. There will be long drive and closest to pin contests and much more. For those planning on competing there will be skins and day money available both days. Team member’s handicaps must be within six of each other. The annual Cortez Junior Golf Tournament, which culminates several weeks of clinic practices and is a stop on the Colorado PGA Junior Golf Tournament Tour, will be held all day today, June 21. Junior golfers from throughout Colorado participate in this tournament. There will be no play on July 2 for the Twilight League players. The league will be extended another week. The last day of the summer golf league is July 16 with an awards dinner to follow. The Cortez Elks Lodge No. 1789 will be hosting its second annual Three-Person Charity Scramble July 14-15. The entry fee is $100 per person which includes green fees, cart, two rounds of golf, and banquet. At least one player per team must be an active Elk. The field is being limited to the first 36 teams which sign up. For more details, phone 565-3557. The annual local qualifying for the RE/MAX World Long Drive Championship will be held at hole no. 18 at 5 p.m. July 6. Conquistador will be the only qualifying site in the Four Corners. Signup is in the Pro Shop. July has several major events on the books. The Coors Light Firecracker Tournament is set for July 7-8. The CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) is slated for July 24. The CMGA Men’s Club Championship will be held July 21-22. Big, big tourneys will be held in August. The annual Ute Mountain Oil Classic will get things under way on Aug. 4. The Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is set for Aug. 14. The grandaddy of them, the Pinto Bean Classic, will be held Aug. 18-19. September may bring a nip to the air and leaf color changes, but it doesn’t mean golf season is over. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set for Sept. 8. The CWGA’s Club Championship is set for Sept. 11-12. The Nielson’s Invitational is slated Sept. 15. The Cortez Senior Championship will be held Sept. 22-23 and the Job’s Daughter’s Tournament will close the tournament schedule Sept. 29. No firm dates have been scheduled for the CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) and their club championship. These will be announced soon. These are only the major tournaments on the block. That does not mean there won’t be some organizations won’t schedule some fund-raisers or scrambles throughout the summer. |
