June 21, 2001 STAFF REPORT The Revengers of Montezuma will be hosting their own Single-Action Shooting Society match this Friday-Sunday, June 22-24, at the Sheriff’s Posse Rodeo Arena on East Empire Street in Cortez. Shooters from all over the Southwest will be competing. There are two styles of shooting. The first is Cowboy Action Shooting, where competitors stand in front of a range with up to three styles of cowboy guns (rifles, pistols and shotguns) to shoot targets made of steel. The second style is mounted shooting where participants are timed thorugh a specific course of travel shooting balloons from horseback. In each of the styles, the person with the fastest times win. There will be single-action shooting from the ground and on horseback at the Cortez show. Action will get under way 8 a.m. all three days but the main matches will be held Saturday and Sunday. Spectators are welcome. Admission is $5 per person for those 16 and older. For more information about the show, phone 565-2523. Several local members of the Revengers of Montezuma recently returned from Norco, Calif., where they competed in the annual World Championship finals at the End of Trail SASS Shoot. The event was the third largest shooting competition in the United States. Seven members of the local SASS mounted shooting club attended the End of Trail event in California. Nihla McCabe (also known as Helda Huginkiss) received a World Championship buckle for her third-place standing in the Number Two Division. Also attending were Reed McCabe (aka Rico Star), Wanda Martin (aka Aneeda Huginkiss), Chuck Martin (aka Cannonball Charlie), Deena Teague (aka Kenya Huginkiss), Jeff Stewart (aka Piedra Kid), and Jennifer Stewart (aka Dolores Starr). All shooters entered into the special drawing and Wanda Martin came home with a new black powder special drawing and a new Australian saddle called The Shootist. |
