Leopard Sharks bring home medals, ribbons

The Cortez Leopard Sharks, under new head coach Jess Straham, have been racking up the medals and ribbons from their first two meets of the season, according to information from the organization.

The Sharks hosted their annual Cortez Invitational Swimming Meet at City Park Pool June 8-10. Several teams participated including the Aspen Speedos, Colorado Rapids, Delta Barracudas, Durango Swim Club, Four Corners Aquatic Team, Grand Junction Dolphins, Grand Valley Wave, Gunnison Singrays, Klein Oak Area Swim Team, Montrose Marlins, Ouray Swim Team, Pagosa Lakes Porpoises, Sopris Barracudas, and Telluride Torpedoes.

Medals were award for first through sixth and ribbons for seventh-12th.

Several Leopard Sharks performed well at that meet.

In Girls 8-Under, Cassie Blakney, competing in her first meet, took 13th in 25-yard freestyle in 45.63 and 25 back stroke in 49.90. Teslin Maclaren won ribbons for eighth in 100 freestyle with a time of 4 minutes, 19.72 seconds and 50 free in 2:01.75, 25 back (10th) in 45.31, 25 free (11th) in 29.57, and 25 back (11th) 33.91.

Hayley Andrews just missed getting ribbons in the Girls 9-10 age bracket. She placed 15th in 50 breast in 1:07.09 and 16th in 50 free in 58.58. Haylie Cumpton finished 18th in 50 breast in 1:13.42, 19th in 50 free in 1:17.13 and 22nd in 50 back. Chantell Eyetoo, competing in her first meet, took 18th in 50 free in 1:03.58.

Several girls did well in the 11-12 bracket. Nelsa Burkett took 17th in 100 individual medley in 1:54.62 and 33rd in 100 breast and 36th in 50 back. Jessie Garbesi earned a ribbon for placing 12th in the 100 butterfly in 2:01.95. She placed 15th in both 100 I.M. in 1:36.07 and 400 free in 7:54.23. She was 19th in 200 I.M. in 4:10.48, 18th in 50 butterfly in 50.48, 30th in 100 breast, 31st in 100 back, 29th in 50 breast and 21st in 200 free.

Hannah Maclaren just missed getting a ribbon by taking 13th in 100 back in 1:53.49. She grabbed 21st in 50 fly, 32nd in 100 breast, 16th in 50 back in 48.33, and 33rd in 100 free. She also placed 33rd in 50 free, 34th in 50 breast, and 25th in 200 free. Katie Millican set a new team record (junior olympic time) by taking a gold medal for winning the 50 butterfly in 35.06 seconds. She earned a bronze for taking third in the 100 I.M. in 1:19.15. She finished ninth in the 400 free in 6:34.37, fifth in both the 100 breast in 1:43.70 and 50 back in 44.07, 11th in 100 free in 1:25.81, eighth in 50 free in 35.81, first in 100 butterfly in 1:30.20, ninth in 50 breast in 47.65, and sixth in 100 back in 1:37.11.

Jessica Millican, participating in senior girls, grabbed two ribbons for taking ninth in 200 breast in 3:42.99 and in 100 breast in 1:44.59. She also took 13th in 200 back in 3:48.43, 18th in 100 free in 1:29.49, 14th in 50 free in 39.63, and 14th in 100 back in 1:46.83. Lianna Tallent, swimming in her first meet, placed 13th in 200 breast in 5:21.88, 22nd in 100 free, 16th in 50 free in 48.78, and 16th in 100 breast in 2:16.16.

Bridger Trap, competing in the Boys 8-U age group, grabbed medals for taking third in 25 breast in 30.72, fourth in 25 back in 31.70 and sixth in 25 free in 32.92. Cliffy Fowler, also participating in his first meet in Boys 11-12, took 16th in 100 free in 2:16.66, 19th in 50 free in 1:05.04, and 14th in 50 breast in 1:11.93.

In the Boys 13-14 age bracket, Ian Maclaren took home several ribbons. He placed ninth in 200 back in 3:43.84, placed 11th in four other events (200 I.M. in 3:34.34, 200 breast in 3:56.94, 100 free in 1:27.09, and 100 breast in 1:49.99) and finished 14th in 50 free in 37.53. Skyler McCullough came in 10th in both the 100 free in 1:22.60 and 50 free in 34.65.

The Sharks opened the 2001 summer swim club season by competing at Gunnison June 2-3. Joing Cortez and host Gunnison were Telluride, Delta, Ouray, Grand Valley, Durango, and Montrose.

Medals were given for first-third and ribbons for fourth-sixth placers. Several Cortez swimmers did well.

In Girls 8-Under, Tess Maclaren came in sixth in 50 breasst in 1:13.90, seventh in both 25 back in 33.69 and 50 free in 1:36.93, and eighth in 25 free in 39.81. Cumpton grabbed 11th in 100 back in 2:01.44 and 16th in 50 free in 1:00.69. Garbesi captured fourth in 100 fly in 1:55.27, seventh in 200 free in 3:12.67, 16th in both 50 breast in 52.29 and 50 back in 46.47, 12th in 50 fly in 47.45, 15th in 100 breast in 1:53.99, and 10th in 200 I.M. in 3:38.99.

Hannah Maclaren grabbed sixth in 50 free in 1:33.55. She took 17th in 50 free in 38.83, 15th in 100 I.M. in 1:43.13, 10th in 50 back in 42.75, 17th in 100 free in 1:37.57, 14th in 50 fly in 47.67, and 19th in 100 breast in 2:21.03. Katie Millican came home with firsts in 100 butterfly in 1:19.14 and 50 fly in 32.44. She came in second in 50 back in 36.47, fourth in 50 breast in 41.37, fifth in 50 free in 32.07, sixth in 100 breast in 1:35.80, and seventh in 100 free in 1:17.70.

Jessica Millican came in second in the 100 breast in 1:31.06, third in 100 free in 1:14.98, and fourth in both 50 free in 33.01 and 100 back in 1:31.03. Ian Maclaren touched the wall in second four times (100 free in 1:17.18, 100 back 1:29.04, 200 breast 3:36.43, and 50 free 33.83), and he came in third in 200 free in 3:11.20.

Straham said he wanted to thank all of the parents who helped with the meet.
