First Mesa Verde Stampede draws 38 contestants

RAE BUFFINGTON, who competes in the 12-16 age group, rounds a barrel during action at the first of the annual Mesa Verde Stampede Family Rodeo Series at Wild Wild Rest Arena. A total of 38 contestants competed. The second rodeo of the series will be held June 30.

The first rodeo of the annual Mesa Verde Stampede Family Rodeo Series was held May 26 at the Wild Wild Rest Rodeo Arena, located just a mile east of the Mesa Verde National Park entrance off U.S. Highway 160. The rodeo drew 38 contestants.

Here are the results of that first show, according to information from rodeo organizer Sarah Show:

Boot Race: (4-and-under) Shavargus Noyes; (5-7): Tana Show, Levi Noyes; (8-11): Kacia Show, Clint Show, Kayla Dennison, Cody Reib and Jennie Rieb (tie); (12-16) Levi Lewis, Shailey Boyd, Holly Buffington, Butch Show.

Ribbon Pull: (5-7): Toni White, T. Show, Shawn McKinley, Noyes; (8-11): Dennison, C. Reib, Tyler Jones, Deagan Kennedy, J. Rieb; (12-16): Cody Meyer and B. Show (tie).

A new arena is being built, but donations are needed. Sand needs to be hauled and manpower needed to build some holding pens. The arena will be regulation 140X300 feet. Ropings will also be held as soon as the arena is completed. New steel panels have been purchased.

The Mesa Verde Stampede Family Rodeo Series, the second one of the season, will get under way at 10 a.m. on June 30 at the Wild Wild Rest Arena.

Signup is set from 9-10 a.m. the day of the rodeo with an entry fee of $2 per event except for sheep ($5). The events include pole bending, barrel racing, flag, keyhole, boot race, stickhorse, and stickhorse barrel. Also there will be relay, rawhide, ribbon, and jackpot barrels. Age groups are 4-and-Under, 5-7, 8-11, 12-16, 17-25 and 26 up.

Concessions will be available.

The dates for the remaining rodeos will be July 28, and Aug. 25. For more information, phone Show at 533-7269 or 533-9747. Show sais the July 28 show will be part of the annual Mancos Days celebration. A special day of horse races, which were very popular a year ago, will be held on July 29.
