Largest field of riders compete

THE RIDERS REVE UP THEIR ENGINES for the start of the SuperMini II Classfication at the American Motorcycle Association-sanctioned races on Sunday at Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos. Near perfect weather and some 184 riders competed as more than 3,000 fans watched.

It was the largest field of riders (184) to date who came on Sunday, June 10, to ride motocross at the Wild Wild Rest Track near Mancos. Some came from as far aways as Wamsutter, Wyo., plus some from New Mexico towns and cities of Albuquerque, Cedar Crest, Espanola, Gallup, Moriarty, Rio Rancho, Santa Fe; and from various Colorado towns of Telluride, Nucla, Ridgway, and Clifton.

It was the largest crowd of more than 3,000 plus who attended the day of motorcycle racing. Ray McCarty, who operates the track, said that Four Corners Materials made the added touch by putting down a perfect track.

In the 250cc A Pro Classification, Bear Hensley of Moriarty drove his Yamaha wire-to-wire to win. David Fay of Farmington started in third but finished in second. Dan McFarland of Durango won the 250 B Amateur class but he was the only entry this week. Hensley also won the Open A Pro while Fay took second. Fay, on his Kawaski, won the Open Veteran Classification. McFarland placed second.

Will Hall of Durango captured first place in the 250 C Novice class. Louis Gallegos (hometown unknown) started in first but dropped to all the way to third before finishing in second. Kyle Roach of Farmington took third. Robert Yarbrough of Cortez won the 250cc Beginner class. Dalton Boyd of Aztec, N.M., was the winner in the 80A class. Again, he was the only one entered. Bronson Huber of Gallup drove from third to first while Zach Gurley of Farmington came in second and A.J. Bell, also Farmington, placed third in the 80B class. Bell won the Schoolboy division while riding his Yamaha.

Tyler Jensen (unknown hometown) came in first while riding his Honda i n the 80C class. Isaiah Duran of Espanola was the champion in the 80C Beginner class. Chance Simonson of Cortez came in second. Will Rainer of Cortez came in eighth. Billy Swapp of Durango was the winner in the 125B Amateur class. Jose Moya of Alcade, N.M., grabbed second. Swapp came in first in the Open B Amateur class. Gallegos won the Open C Novice. Roach came in second and Hall third. Jesse Montoya took fifth while Travis Olson of Mancos grabbed sixth and Sean Boone of Dolores eighth.

Mike Szabo (hometown unknown) drove his bike wire to wire in the 125C Novice class. Derick Prokop of Pagosa Springs improved from third to second while Montoya dropped from second to third. Boone came in seventh. Robert Yarbrough of Cortez won the Open CC Beginner class. Ted Coleman of Aztec came in second.

Jami Still of Cortez drove his Yamaha to first place in the 125cc Beginner class. Duston Russell of Dolores went around twice in third and then moved into second. Toby Gonzales of Pagosa was in sixth after the first lap but improved to second and then faded to third. John Phelps of Cortez came in seventh.

Ryan Duran of Espanola rode his KTM to a first in the SuperMini 60. Killy Rusk of Durango came in third while Jesse Bolen of Rio Rancho went from fourth to third. Adam Nickerson of Dolores started in third but dropped to fourth. Duran also won the 60A class going start to finish. Nickerson came in fourth.

Rusk won the 60B class. Bolen finished the first lap in third but moved into second. Joshua Whatley of Aztec drove his back to second after the first lap but dropped to fourth before finally finishing in third. Tyler Underwood of Dolores place eighth, Simonson ninth, and Corey Adams of Dolores placed 10th.

In SuperMini I, Gurley finished the first two laps in second but rode hard to the finish for the win. Huber went from fourth to first to second while Damien Herrera of Farmington came in third. Talon Rosencrance of Dolores finished in fifth. Whatley won the SuperMini II after starting way back and working his way into third and then to second by the second lap. Jensen came in second while Duran took third.

Rusky also won the 50A class. Adams and Underwood placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Keenan Garcia of Cortez came in sixth, Bowen third and Jay Rainer ninth. Devon Graffis of Cortez, while riding his KTM, took first in the 50B class. Brandon Lattin (hometown unknown) won the Mini Quads. Brandon Thomas, Adrianna Thomas, and Dillon Rosencrance, all from Dolores, finished four, five, six. Dayton Wilson of Mancos won the Quads II. Derek Porter of Cortez came in second while Tyrun Harris of Lewis and Bowen Tucker of Cortez placed fourth and fifth, respectively. Jimmy Wilson of Cortez won the Quads. Dustin Porter of Cortez came in second while Scott Schmidlin of Cortez grabbed fifth and Jerry Barker of Cortez placed eighth.

Jim Broesma of Mancos won the Vintage Classification while riding his ATK. Ray McCarty of Mancos came in second, Walt Buckholts of Dolores third, and Tony Petrosi of Cortez fourth.
