Guys and Dolls golf event top slate at Conquistador

The 2001 golf season is well under way in the Four Corners area. June is a very busy month at the local 18-hole municipal course.

The annual 36-hole Guys and Dolls Tournament was the main focus this past Saturday and Sunday, June 2-3, at Conquistador Golf Course.

The team of Scott and Lisa Pierce captured first low gross honors in the First Flight. The shot rounds of 70-67. There was a two-way tie for second gross. Ray and Sandra Gates, and the duo of Steve Torres and Flav VanWinkle shot identical 77-72 scores. Capturing low net honors was the team of Jim Buffington and Marti Spitzer as they carded 60-54. Taking second net was the squad of Rob and Stacy Kirks at 67-57.

John and Moya Gray took first low gross in the Second Flight as they scored 78-73. Drew and Denise Bates grabbed second gross at 78-74. Ralph Haynie and Sherrill Burton finished as first low net with 61-56. Jim Lacy and Tracy Johnson fired 69-59 for second net.

Jack and Carol Click finished as low gross in the Third Flight with 86-77. John and Connie Lewis came in second at 86-78. Taking first net was the duo of Bruce Harrison and Dottie Banks at 60-57. Mark and Janet Knisley came in second net at 66-58.

Gary and Ann White shot rounds of 84-77 to take first low gross in the Fourth Flight. James Biard and Paula Lively came in second at 86-77. Fred and Jeannie Snyder won low net honors with their rounds of 64-54. Larry and Faye Kautz came in second at 64-58.

In other golf news, Frank Beer of Livingston, Mo., recorded a hole-in-one May 16 at Conquistador Golf Course. He scored the ace using an 8-iron striking a Titleist ball. Witnessing the event were Charley and Joyce Stonehocker of Mancos and Loren Bowles of Cortez, according to information from the golf course.

Conquistador Pro Micah Rudosky just missed qualifying for the United States Open by shooting a 1-over-par for 36 holes played at U.S. Open Sectionals on Tuesday, June 5, at Columbine Golf Course in Denver. Rudosky earned the right to advance to Sectionals by winning Regional Qualifying with a 64 score a week ago at Santa Ana Pueblo Golf Course near Albuquerque.

The annual Doug Lancaster Memorial Four-Person Mixed Scramble is on tap this Saturday, June 9. A-B-C-D golfers are needed and at least one of those must be a lady. The entry fee is $25 per person which includes lunch.

The Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s annual Beat the Pro day is set for June 19. Junior golfers from throughout the Four Corners area will compete in the annual Cortez Junior Golf Classic on June 21. The Cortez Men’s Golf Association’s Two-Man Scramble is slated for June 23-24.

July has several events on the books. The Coors Light Firecracker Tournament is set for July 7-8. The Cortez Elks Lodge Three-Man Scramble will be July 14-15. The CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) is slated for July 24. The CMGA Men’s Club Championship will be held July 21-22.

Big, big tourneys will be held in August. The annual Ute Mountain Oil Classic will get things under way on Aug. 4. The Cortez Women’s Golf Association’s Mesa Verde Tee Cup Invitational is set for Aug. 14. The grandaddy of them, the Pinto Bean Classic, will be held Aug. 18-19.

September may bring a nip to the air and leaf color changes, but it doesn’t mean golf season is over. The Dean Hanson Memorial is set for Sept. 8. The CWGA’s Club Championship is set for Sept. 11-12. The Nielson’s Invitational is slated Sept. 15. The Cortez Senior Championship will be held Sept. 22-23 and the Job’s Daughter’s Tournament will close the tournament schedule Sept. 29.

No firm dates have been scheduled for the CWGA’s President’s Cup (low net tourney) and their club championship. These will be announced soon.

These are only the major tournaments on the block. That does not mean there won’t be some organizations won’t schedule some fund-raisers or scrambles throughout the summer.
