Bill Simmons Memorial on tap Saturday at speedway

Two days of auto racing is on tap this Friday and Saturday, June 8-9, at Fairgrounds Speedway, located about three miles east of Cortez on U.S. Highway 160.

All classes will be racing at 8 p.m. Friday. Gates open at 6. Admission is $7 for adults and $6 for seniors, children 6-12 are $3 and children 5-and-under free. A children’s foot race for 10-11 year olds will be held plus a special powder puff race.

But the big event is on Saturday. The fourth annual Bill Simmons Memorial Street Stock Shoot-Out will have drivers from throughout the Four Corners area participating. This is an open Street Stock race, and not an International Motor Contest Association (IMCA)-sanctioned race. Trophies are being sponsored by the Simmons family. KRWN-FM of Farmington is sponsoring the evening of racing.

Ralph Klemish is currently the leader in classification with 118 points. Ryan Neely is right behind him in the standings with 113. Roger Cordary is next at 107, followed by Gary Smouse 104, David Higgins 101, Jim Montgomery 98, John Hank 91, Daniel Christensen 74, Paul Milano 73, and Bucky Knipp 64, according to information furnished from the track.

Admission for this special night is $1 above the regular price.

Klemish, in car no. 21R, captured first place at last Friday’s show, June 1. Bradley came in second while Farley, Cordary and Smouse chased.

Fans might as well call the Dwarf class the DeVelviss show. Three of the top five drivers have the same last name. Nick DeVelviss came in second, Shane DeVelviss third, and Zane DeVelviss fifth during last week’s racing action. Raymie Bristow took top honors. Harry Nelson came in fourth, Jay Kibel placed sixth and Billy Kibel seventh.

Bristow leads the class in the points standings. He has 108. But closing in fast is Nick DeVelviss with 104, Bill Kibel is third at 103, Nelson is fourth at 100, Shane DeVelviss has 89, Jay Kibel 88, Zane DeVelviss 83, and Shannon Haun checks in with 64.

Steve McDaniel was the big winner in the Mini Stock (formerly Penny) Class. He won last Friday. Jimmy Wilson came in second, Vern Rucker took third, Brian Dattage fourth, Jimmy Scott fifth, Ryan Henley sixth, and Billy Schaapok seventh.

McDaniel leads the standings with 104 points. Scott stands only one point behind him at 103. Schaaphok is third at 101. Wilson and Rucker follow with way back with 64.

Jason Duggins won in the Hobby Stock. Russ Hammell came in second, Marvin Cramer third, Bobby Simons fourth, while Wayne O’Dell, Cody DuFrene, Ron Leonard, and Michelle McDonald followed.

The standings show Hammell is out front with 113, Duggins in next at 107, followed by Cramer 104, McDonald 102, Leonard 97, DuFrene 93, and Dave McFalls 71.

The IMCA Modifieds did not run.

All classes will run June 15 and June 22.

The eighth annual Jim Henry Memorial Modified Shoot-Out is slated for June 29. The event continues on June 30. Mini, Hobby Stock and IMCA stocks will be on the track. KRWN-FM radio is sponsoring the event.

All classes will run July 6. The Mid-Season Championships are set for July 13 with KISZ-FM sponsoring. The Hobby Stock Shoot-Out is on tap for July 20. All classes will run July 27 and Aug. 3.

The Mini Stock Shoot-Out, sponsored by American Custom Flooring, is slated for Aug. 10. All classes will run Aug. 17 and Aug. 24. The Season Championship, sponsored by KRTZ Radio, for all classes is set For Aug. 31.

The Fairgrounds Speedway Association is trying to continue to rebuild the local stock car racing program in order to "continue to provide quality entertainment for the citizens of the area who enjoy the sport of stock car racing," Dennis Beaty, president of the Fairgrounds Speedway Racing Association said.

"We are planning on doing some special events during the races this year to increase the quality of entertainment that we can provide for the fans," he added.

As mentioned earlier, a powder puff race is slated for Friday, June 8. A children’s foot race for 5-under will be held June 15. Kids foot race for 6-7 year olds and quad races will be held June 22. A kids foot race for 8-9 will be held with the Henry Memorial. A powder puff race is set and kids foot race for 10-11 will be held on July 6.

A kids foot race for the youngest set and quad races will be held during the Mid-Season Championships on July 13. A kids foot race for 6-7 and Revengers of Montezuma will be on tap for the Hobby Stock Shoot-Out on July 20. A kids foot race for 8-9 and BMX bike races set for July 27. A kids foot race for 10-11 and a mechanics race is set for Aug. 3. A kids foot race for the youngest group will held at the Mini Stock Shoot-Out. A kids foot race for 6-7 and a powder puff race is slated for Aug. 17. DARE night is the special event ofr Aug. 24. A kids foot race for 10-11 and quad races will be held in association with the Season Championship on Aug. 31.
