The Tri-City Daredevils U10 boys’ soccer team recently took second place at the Farmington Soccer Tournament after a heartbreaking 1-0 loss in overtime of the championship game.

The DareDevils opened the tournament on a very strong 6-0 victory over Farmington. Matt Phelps scored what Todd Starr described as one of the most beautiful goals he’s ever seen from such a young player. Phelps took a free kick from 25 yards out and struck it perfectly, bending the ball up and over the defense and keeper into the upper corner of the goal.

Coach Starr also singled out Andrew ("Cobi Jones") Cuckie, Mason White, Brett Bruner and Ryan Standing as making exceptional contributions to the first victory. Goalies Sam Starr and Aaron Presnell combined for the shutout. Next, the DareDevils took on a tough Aztec team but advanced with the victory.

On Sunday, it was Tri-City vs. Los Alamos in a preview of what would be the championship game. When the morning game ended in a 0-0 draw it meant the DareDevils had finished the regular tournament play in first place and would again meet Los Alamos in the finals.

In the final match, Ryan Baldwin again excelled, sometimes drawing two or three Los Alamos defenders. White, Bruner, Chad Herrick and Matt Phelps also drew the coach’s praise, as did the goalkeeping of Starr, who made nine saves during regulation time including a one-on-one breakaway.

The heat took its toll during overtime and Los Alamos slipped one in after nine minutes to take first place. This was the first outing for the TriCity DareDevils and a very good one at that. The boys next play in Grand Junction on Friday and Saturday, June 8 and 9.
