STAFF REPORT

Penty of water came down the Dolores River on Saturday, June 2. It was more than enough for this year’s 18th Dolores River Raft Races, sponsored by the Dolores Chamber of Commerce.

After a year off because of low water, the Dolores River Raft Days were back. The weather cooperated fully this time with sunny skies and warm temperatures unlike the snowy, cold weather two years ago.

There were two competitive heats plus a business class race. In the competitive division, rafters started (timed portion) at Stapleton Bridge and went down to Fourth Street Bridge. The rafts were put in a Line Camp and taken out near Joe Rowell Park.

Koko’s captured first place with a time of 53 minutes, 11 seconds. Dolores Liquors-Hollywood Bar came in second at 53:20. Dolores Drywall took third in 53:48 while Cortez Journal Infernals grabbed fourth in 54:01. Canyon Sports and Community Bank rounded out the teams in 55:47 and 56:10, respectively. Koko’s riders split $600. The second-place team won $300. The third-place team took home some mugs and Colorado road map book.

The business heat was to be a friendly tag team bouy race on McPhee but it was changed to a shorter run down the river. Vectra Bank captured first in 30:29. Precision Excavation finished in second in 30:50. Gonzales Construction took third in 33:46 and Monkey Business ended up in fourth in 34:20.

Many events were held. There was plenty of food, music plus an arts and crafts show, paper airplane contest and games at the Community Center. A special Pokemon Trading Card Swap Meet for kids was held. The Rio Grande Southern Galloping Goose No. 5 was running on the tracks in front of the Galloping Goose Historical Society Rio Grande Southern Depot and Town Hall. Wayne Brown was the motorman.

The Hi-Altitude Steel Car Club held a car show at Riverside Park. Various street rods, custom cars, vintage cars, muscle cars and other street machines will be on display.

Several members of the "Revengers of Montezuma," a single-action sport shooting society, will present a mounted shooting exhibition. The wore period 1880s costumes and displayed their marksmanship.

The Hollywood Bar and Cafe is sponsoring a fun triathlon event featuring darts, shuffleboard and pocket billiards.

A safety demonstration by the youth organization JAKES, sponsored by the National Turkey Federation and Four Corners Gobblers, was held. The Gobblers demonstrated their turkey calls.

The Dolores Public Library held its annual book sale.
