By Jim Thomas Journal Sports Editor Summer means sports camps for area student-athletes. MCHS is hosting the fifth annual Brigham Young University Volleyball Camp in Ron Wright Memorial Gym, according to MCHS head coach Lindy Mortensen. The Canyon Enterprise-Brigham Young University Volleyball Camp got under way Monday and will conclude Thursday, June 4-7, in Ron Wright Memorial Gym. The camp is for girls 7-12th grades (school year 2001-02). The camp offers individual fundamentals and team skills. The clinicians are BYU men’s assistant Jeremiah Larsen and his help Mike Wilton. The Montezuma-Cortez High School Cheerleaders are sponsoring a Youth Cheerleading Camp for girls in 3-8th grades (this fall). It will be held June 11-13 from 8 a.m.-noon and June 14 from 8-10 a.m. (review, performance, and awards). The camp will be held at Centennial Park on the north side of the Library. Registration will be held from 7:30-8:30 a.m. June 11. The cost is $50 per participant. Checks should be made payable to MCHS Cheerleaders. Girls will learn the fundamentals of cheerleading and excellent instruction. They will learn cheer chants, dances, jumps, and to do safe tumbling stunts. The fee also includes a tee-shirt, daily snacks and refreshments, and an opportunity to ride in a float during the Ute Mountain Roundup Rodeo, June 14-15. Those attending the camp should bring comfortable shoes, shirts, and shorts (p.e. type). Sweatshirts may be needed for cool mornings. For more information or a registration form, phone 564-9697. The Tri-City Soccer Association is once again sponsoring the British Soccer Camp again this summer, according to organizer Debra Ramsey. The first year it was held, the British Soccer Camp attracted about 25 children. Last year more than 60 participated. The camp is hoping to draw even more this year. It is one of the most respected and experienced soccer training organizations in the United States. Challenger British Soccer Camps is returning to offer one week of their highly-praised training camps to the growing soccer community in Montezuma County. The camp is set July 16-20 at Parque de Vida. The week-long camp offers three-hour morning sessions for the novice player and three-hour afternoon sessions for the older, more experienced players. The camp will run Monday through Friday and each child will be coached by a member of the professional British staff who has been flown to the United States exclusively to perform a series of summer coaching camps for the Kansas-based company, Challenger British Soccer Camps. The Challenger British Soccer will be responsible for coaching more than 60,000 players and more than 20,000 coaches before the end of this summer. During the week of the camp, the staff will hold a free coaching clinic for parents and coaches at Parque de Vida in Cortez. That clinic is planned for July 17 (6:30 p.m.) and will cover such areas as organization of practices, technical and tactical drills, and systems of play. The cost of the camp is $80 which includes a camp ball and tee shirt. There are family discounts available for those with more than one child; $5 off for second child and $10 off for third. Registration forms are currently available at Cortez City Hall, and Howard’s Sporting Goods in Cortez. Tri-City Soccer is also seeking families who would be interested in hosting a British Coach in their home for the duration of the camp. Phone Ramsey at 565-3086 for more information. The Fort Lewis College girls basketball camps are approaching and will be held at the campus in the sky in Durango. Camps will provide intense instruction in each skill area for girls in grades 3-12. Overnight campers will stay in FLC residence halls and eat three meals daily in the cafeteria. Cost includes instruction, all camp costs, speakers, athletic training, prizes, T-shirts, lodging, and meals.
