MCHS Panther boys take third place in 4A Regionals; Mancos boys, girls take second in 2A meet

GRAND JUNCTION — All of the area prep track and field teams competed Saturday, May 12, at the Western Regional Track Meet at Stocker Stadium. Those finishing among the top three places, along with those athletes who prequalified at earlier meets, will move on to this Friday’s and Saturday’s (May 18-19) State Track and Field Championships at Lakewood (4A-5A) and Pueblo (2A-3A).

The biggest winner was the Mancos track teams. Both the boys and girls placed second in Class 2A at the meet. The Montezuma-Cortez High School boys team took third in the 4A division. Dolores boys placed fifth in 2A.

Cortez will be taking a number of athletes to state. Josh Lee placed second in both the 100- and 200-meter dashes. He also finished sixth in the 400. A.J. Herrmann took second in the 110 high hurdles with a time 15.74 time. Levi Hill came in seventh in that race. In the 300 hurdles, Jeff Yarbrough’s second place of time of 41.41 will take him to State.

Jeff Anderson jumped 6-foot-4 in the high jump which was good enough for third. Yarbrough placed fifth.

In the shot-put competition, Brian Balfour, who was coming off a season-nagging injury, placed fourth with a throw of 43-10. Derique Duran came in fifth with a throw of 43-6 and Oliver Erickson followed with in sixth with a toss of 42-7.

On the girls’ side, the Panther 4X100 relay team of Tasha Toles, Kristi Christensen, Kendra Taylor and Dawn Keck will be going to State, having brought home the third-place ribbon from Regionals. Also placing, but not moving on to State, was Toles who took sixth in the 100 with a time of 13.33. Marie DeBolt took sixth in the 200. Her time was 27.93. In the 100 high hurdles, Kristi Chritensen cleared them in 17.93 which was good enough of fourth.

Several of the girls’ relay teams just missed qualifying for State. The 4X200 placed fourth, while fifth place was earned by the 4X400, 4X800 and 800 medley.

Mancos will be taking a full bus load to the State meet at Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo.

For the girls, Amanda Kennedy took second in both the 100 and 200 with times of 12.94 and 26.72, respectively. Jori Yeomans took second in two middle distance running events, the 800 and the 1600. Rachel Russell won the shot competition with a throw of 38-14. Teammate Kassi Paxton threw a personal record 98-9 in the discus to earn first. Russell placed second with a throw of 97-11. In the triple jump, Kerri Morgan’s jump of 31-0 was good enough for second.

Mancos will take two girls’ relay teams. The 4X100 team of Morgan, Lacey Morris, Brittany Aspromonte, and Kennedy captured second. The 4X400 team also placed second. Those runners include Yeomans, Morgan, Aspromonte, and Morris.

For the boys, Philip Wilson placed third in the 100 and second in the 400. Jesse Rousett placed third in the 400 while Jakob Tallent was fifth. Daniel Wilson just missed moving on to State in the 110 high hurdles with his fourth-place time of 17.45. Kent Russell finished seventh in that event. In the 300 intermediate hurdles, Wilson took sixth and Russell seventh.

Sven McNeil took fourth in the 800 with a time of 2 minutes, 12.90 seconds. Micah Sucherman came in fourth in the 1600 in 4:58.59. Preston Hennrich placed eighth. Hennrich also took seventh in the 3200.

Travis Clark came in third in the discus with a throw of 124-0. Josh Seymour place seventh with his throw of 111-5. In the long jump, Russell leaped 18-0 which put him in seventh.

The Mancos boys’ relay teams also did well. The 4X100 team of Wilson, Chase Davis, Tallent, and Doyle Edgerton will go to State with their third-place finish. The 4X200 squad of Russell, Tallent, Alan Cummings and Rousett also placed third. The 4X400 team of Wilson, Rousett, Tallent, and Edgerton took first and the 4X800 team of McNeil, Sucherman, Hennrich, and Edgerton took second.

Dolores will be taking one boy and five girls to Pueblo.

Cody Beaver won the 110 high hurdles with a new meet record of 14.97. He also won the 300 hurdles with a 40.51 time. Beaver will also be competing in the 100 as he took second in that event.

Kristen Gustafsen earned her right to go to the State meet with her second-place finish in the 3200. She finished the race in 14:11.76 Gustafsen also earned a seventh in the 800 and a fourth in the 1600. Jennifer Trevillian will go to Pueblo to compete in the high jump as she took second.

The 800 medley relay team of Sheena Burns, Kori Ackles, Ashley Ramirez, and Trevillian placed third at Grand Junction to earn their trip.

Other placers for Dolores include Garrett Nielson, who finished fifth in both the 100 and 200; Theirry Monville who place fifth in the 800 in 2:14.18; Drew Webster finished eighth (2:15.73) in that event; and Derek Thompson placed eighth in the discus with a throw of 111-4.

The 4X100 relay team of Nielson, Luke Ragland, Juan Ramirez, and Frank Costa placed fourth. Ragland, Ramirez, Webster, and Costa ran the 4X400 to fourth. In the 4X200, Ramirez, Nielson, Ragland, and Beaver took fourth.

Trevillian ran 27.63 in the 200 which gave a fourth-place ribbon. In the 400, Burns placed fourth, Ramirez sixth, and Ann Fecteau eighth. Ackles took home seventh in the 100. The 4X100 team of Ackles, Fecteau, Melissa Pellegrom and Gloria Spada placed sixth while the 4X400 team of Fecteau, Pellegrom, Ramirez, and Spada placed fifth.

Dolores County will be competing at State in the 4X400, the 100 hurdles, and the long jump. Shandra Johnson placed third in both the hurdles and long jump. The 4X400 team of Charlene Atkins, Christine Atkins, Amanda Johnson, and Krystal Neely placed third. Alyssa Redshaw placed fourth in the 100 and fifth in the 200. However, Redshaw prequalified in both of those events.

None of the Dove Creek boys will be moving on to state.
