Hyakuno loses in first round at tennis

PUEBLO — Itsuki Hyakuno, a senior Japanese exchange student on the Montezuma-Cortez High School girls varsity tennis team, lost her opening-round no. 1 singles match at the annual Class 4A Girls Tennis State Tournament in Pueblo.

Hyakuno lost 1-6, 2-6 on Thursday, May 10, to Lisa Miller of Kent-Denver at the Pueblo City Park Tennis Courts.

Just a week before at Regionals in Grand Junction, she crushed a player from Paonia 6-1, 6-2 in the opening match. Hyakuno took on Glenwood Springs in the second round and defeated that girl 6-0, 6-4. That put her into the Regional finals against Laura Gordon, defending state champ and national tournament winner last summer. Hyakuno lost 0-6, 0-6 at the Elliott Tennis Center on the campus of Mesa State College.

Gordon breezed to her first-round win with a 6-0, 6-0 win over Katie Murray of St. Mary’s Academy. Gordon also won in the semifinals with a 6-1, 6-3 win. The finals were slated for Friday afternoon, May 11.

Montrose High School, which won its seventh 4A Regional title last weekend, got its no. 1 doubles team of Gina Davenport-Jessica Eide into the finals with a hard-fought 6-7, 7-6, 6-3 win in the opening round over a Niwot tandem and then they won 2-6, 6-4, 6-4. No. 3 singles Carly Hornbeck won 6-0, 6-1 in the first round and lost in the semifinals 3-6, 2-6. No. 2 singles Kim Barberi fell to Marissa Brown of Pueblo South 5-7, 4-6. No. 4 doubles team of Stacey Nichols-Margaret Jankowski won 3-6, 6-3, 6-1 over Holy Family but lost in the second round.
