Local rifle club scores high in area competitions held recently

The Four Corners Junior Rifle Club, headquartered here in Cortez, participated in several indoor rifle shooting competitions recently and several members hit their targets for high scores.

Several participated in the Colorado State Indoor Rifle Championships held recently in Grand Junction. The scores from the Front Range and the Western Slope were all combined and Glen Brace of Cortez was crowned the State Indoor Rifle Champion. Ashley Ouellette took first place in the Marksman Classification and finished fourth in the State of Colorado.

Brace and Ouellette traveled to Albuquerque, for several Sectionals. Brace took gold in the New Mexico Junior Three-Position Sectional, gold in the N.M. Open Three-Position Section, gold in the N.M. Open Four-Position Sectional, and gold in the N.M. Junior Four-Position Sectional. Ouellette grabbed first in the Marksman Class in the N.M. Open Three-Position and first in the Intermediate Junior in the Junior Three-Position.

The club also sent four competitors to Grand Junction for the Westen Slope Invitational-Junior Smallbore Rifle Prone and Team Matches.

Ouellette captured third in the Intermediate Junior. Tommy Hampton came in ninth in the Intermediate Junior. Hampton, by the way, has only been with the club since January. This was his first match. Jake Heather came in second in the Sub Junior. Brace was the match winner.

In the team match competition, host Grand Junction won the event. It beat Cortez by the number of Xs: Grand Junction had 363-12x’s while Cortez scored 363-9x’s. The Cortez team members were: Heath in prone, Hampton sitting, Ouellette kneeling, and Brace off-hand.

Cortez hosted its Prone Invitational recently at the Four Corners Rifle and Pistol Club, which sponsors the local club.

Dalton Daves of Cortez took first place in the Tyro. Kellen Alstat of Grand Junction came in first in the Sub Junior. Heath took second in the Sub Junior. Jesse Alber of Grand Junction grabbed third in the Sub Junior. Kyle Fiegel of Grand Junction captured first in the Intermediate Junior. Ouellette finished in second in the Intermediate Junior. Alstat took third in the Intermediate Junior.

In other matches, Lindz Brace grabbed fifth in the Intermediate Junior. Hampton captured sixth in the Inertermediate. Ryan Fiegel of Grand Junction came in first in the Junior Class.

The big news about its own Prone Invitational is that Cortez won the team match. Cortez finished with 371-10x’s while Grand Junction finished way back at 357-10X’s. The Cortez team members were: Hampton (prone), Linz Brace (sitting), Ouellette (kneeling), and Glen Brace (off-hand).
