May 10, 2001 STAFF REPORT BAYFIELD — The third race of the Four Corners Cup Mountain Bicycle Series will be held this Sunday, May 12, near here at Saul’s Creek. This is the third scheduled race of the cup series. Actually, the first race was held in Aztec, N.M., as part of the Aztec UFO Symposium. Acutally, some bike riders who participated in the Blue Mountain Triathlon (28-mile bike ride) near Monticello, Utah, back in late February received points toward the end-of-season standings. The third race of the series was held in Farmington on Pinion Mesa on April 21. The Battle of the Badlands was one of the original races in the Four Corners Cup Series. Registration for the Bayfield event will take place from 8-9 a.m. the day of the race. To get to the staging area, go east through Bayfield on U.S. Highway 160 to La Plata County Road 526 and turn right. Take the right fork to CR 528 and follow the signs to the race start, park on the side of road. This year riders will take a different course than the one used the year before. This year the course will 10 miles of ture single track/cross country riding, along with last year’s seven miles of the course. The course setting is in cool Ponderosa Pines with views of the San Juan Mountains. Race fee, including the late fee, is $25. That includes awards and a Subway lunch at the race site. The only Four Corners Cup race in Arizona will be held at Cove, just over the New Mexico border on the Navajo Reservation, south and a little west of Shiprock. The course is set in red sandstone with arches and towers, similar to Moab’s scenery. Entry forms for this race will be available at the Bayfield race. The date for that race is May 20. Tent camping will be available at the Cove school. The race is a fund-raiser for the Cove school’s summer activities. The event will be held at Echo Basin Resort with the bike riders starting at 10 a.m. Volunteers are needed to help on site during the race.
