DCHS girls, Mancos boys win San Juan League titles

MANCOS’ PHILIP WILSON runs down the track during the 100-meter dash on Friday afternoon at the San Juan Basin League Track and Field Meet at Bayfield High School. He helped the Mancos boys to the league title. Dolores County’s girls won their division. The 2A Western Slope Regionals is set for this Saturday in Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction.

BAYFIELD — The high school track teams from Dolores, Mancos, and Dove Creek all traveled here on Friday, May 4, for the Class 2A San Juan Basin League meet, along with Norwood, Nucla, and Telluride.

This was also the league meet for the 1-2A Mountain League (Crested Butte, Silverton, DeBeque, and Ouray), and for the 3-A Intermountain Leauge which includes Pagosa Springs, Monte Vista, Bayfield, Centauri, and Ignacio. The races ran together, but the points and places were kept separately by each league staff.

For the girls, Dolores County has a strong and team and can claim the title of league champions. Dolores girls came in second and Mancos third.

The Mancos team of Kerri Morgan, Lacey Morris, Brittany Aspromonte, and Amanda Kennedy placed first in the 4X100 relay. Dolores took second with a team of An Fecteau, Gloria Spada, Kori Ackles and Ashley Ramirez. Mancos also took first in the 4X400 with a team of Jori Yeomans, Morgan, Morris, and Kennedy. Their time was 4 minutes, 25.6 seconds. Dove Creek took second in the relay and Dolores third. The DCHS 4X200 team of Shandra Johnson, Krystal Neely, Joie Nidiffer, and Alyssa Redshaw took first, followed by the Dolores team of Jennifer Trevillian, Ashley Ramirez, Sheena Burns, and Ackles.

In the running events, Dove Creek has speed in the sprints. Johnson took first in the 100-meter high hurdles and in the 300 hurdles. She was followed in second place by Ackles of Dolores in both events.

Redshaw placed first in the 100 dash, actually running a tie with Kennedy. Both girls ran a state qualifying time of 13.29 and a flip of a coin determined who won. Trevillian and Burns came in third and fourth, respectively. Kennedy got back in the 200 and took the first-place spot over Redshaw. Trevillian came in third and Burns fourth.

All three teams placed well in the 400, but Morris can claim first. Burns and Ramirez took second and third. Charlene Atkins and Tia Wood of Dolores County took fourth and fifth. Fecteau came in sixth.

Yeomans took the 800 with a time of 2:40.7. Kristen Gustafsen of Dolores placed fourth. She took first in the 1600 (6:24.0) and in the 3200. Dove Creek’s Krystal Neely and Atkins who took second and third in the 1600. It was Dove Creek’s Tia Wood taking second in the 3200.

Mancos won the shotput competition with Rachel Russell coming in first. DCHS’s Amanda Johnson placed fourth. Russell also took first in the discus with teammate Kassi Paxton taking second.

The three rival teams split the winnings in the jumps. Morgan took first in the triple jump with a leap of 30-feet, 7 1/4 inches. Trevillian took first in the high jump, going over the bar at 4-6. Yeomans and fellow MHS teammate Casey Orona took second and third, respectively. In the long jump, it was Shandra Johnson of Dove Creek placing first and teammate Joie Nidiffer placing fourth.

On the boys’ side, Mancos edged out Dolores for the title by a score of 149 to 148. Dove Creek came in a distant third.

The 4X100 team by Phil Wilson, Chase Davis, Jakob Tallent and Doyle Edgerton from Mancos ran for first. The Dolores team of Frank Costa, Chris Buckholts, Luke Ragland, and Garrett Nielson placed fourth. The Dolores team of Nielson, Buckholts, Ragland, and Cody Beaver took first in the4X200, and Mancos, running with Kent Russell, Tallent, Allen Cummings, and Davis placed second. In the race that determined the final team score - the 4X400 - Mancos placed third with its team of Wilson, Cummings, Tallent, and Edgerton. Dolores came in fourth with runners Drew Webster, Buckholts, Thierry Monville, and Costa.

Beaver dominated the hurdles, bringing home first in both the 110 high and 300 intermediate. Russell and Daniel Wilson placed third and fourth, respectively, in the 300.

In the 100 sprint, Wilson ran for first while Beaver and Nielson took second and third. Nielson took first in the 200 with a time of 23.3 and Wilson placed second. Bru Meyer of Dolores County placed fourth. Tallent won the 400 while Buckholts came in second. Edgerton won the 800. Webster took second and Monville fourth. Jake Williams of Dove Creek pulled in sixth.

Micah Sucherman of Mancos ran for second in the 1600. Webster took third. Webster also took third in the 3200 with Mancos’ Preston Hennrich coming in fourth.

Josh Seymour of Mancos threw the shot for fourth place. Derek Thompson of Dolores placed sixth. In the discus, it was Travis Clark of Mancos coming in first with a throw of 147-7. Thompson placed fourth and Seymour sixth.

The season is pretty much winding down. On Friday and Saturday, May 11-12, most of the 2A, 3A, and 4A teams from the Western Slope will meet at Stocker Stadium in Grand Junction for Regionals. Competitors who place first, second or third, in additon to those who have turned in state qualifying performances in previous meets, will advance to the State Track and Field Championships May 18-19. Class 4A and 5A schools will hold State at Jefferson County Stadium in Lakewood while 2-3A teams will meet in Dutch Clark Stadium in Pueblo.
