Panther girls tennis team drops match to Demons

DURANGO — Montezuma-Cortez High School’s varsity girls tennis team showed some flashes in a recent match at Durango. Although the Panthers lost 6-1 on the scoreboard, many of their Southwestern League matches were close.

Japanese exchange student Itsuki Hyakuno continues to dominate her opponents. She looked very strong in beating no. 1 singles player Michelle Stoltzman 3-6, 2-6.

Blair Murphy posted a 6-0, 6-0 decision over MCHS German exchange student Jenny Trendlebernt at no. 2 singles. Danica Erickson dropped Panther Emily Harclerode at no. 3 singles with a 6-0, 6-1 victory.

In doubles play, Durango’s Natalie Mayer and Keara Murphy defeated Amanda Frazier and Chesleigh Keen 6-0, 6-1 at the No. 1 spot. Veronique Jarrell-King and Lindsay Eppich beat Panthers Tracy Berhost and Ashleigh Reed at No. 2 doubles in straight sets 6-1, 6-1. Durango’s Maggie Wilson and Rachel McCoola stopped Colette Hall and Arista Petillo 6-0, 6-3 at no. 3 doubles. Ashley Erickson and Sarah Hubbs dropped Cortez’ Cassie Carver and Liz Dennison 6-1, 6-0 at no. 4 doubles.

The Panthers hosted Central of Grand Junction Friday afternoon and will host Fruita-Monument at 10 a.m. today, April 21, in Southwestern League play at Parque de Vida Tennis Courts.

They travel to Glenwood Springs on April 28 and then to Grand Junction to face high on April 29 to end the regular season. Regionals is set for May 4-5 in Grand Junction. The Colorado State Class 4A Tennis Tournament is slated for May 10-12.
