April 17, 2001 STAFF REPORT The post-season awards for the winter prep sports season are still coming in as several area basketball players were honored by the state’s leading newspaper, The Denver Post. In boys basketball, two Montezuma-Cortez High School players, and one each from Mancos, Dolores and Dolores County were named Honorable Mention All-State. In girls basketball, a Dolores player was named First Team. In Class 4A, the Panthers chosen to the elite list were senior post-forward Chris Garland and sophomore point guard Marcus Mortensen. The two boys helped Cortez to the quarterfinal round of the state basketball tournament. Chosen All-Colorado (all classifications) were Collins Ferris, a 6-foot-1 senior from Rocky Mountain; 6-9 senior Andy Osborn from Longmont; 6-5 senior Ross Schraeder of Denver-East; 6-8 senior Patrick Simpson of Washington; and 6-4 senior Brian Wood of Buena Vista. Simpson was named Player of the Year and Porter Cutrell of Mullen picked Coach of the Year. Picked to the Class 4A All-State First Team were: 6-4 senior Dusty Axtell of Valley; 6-1 senior Brian Beecraft of Rifle; 6-0 senior Stephen Bahi of Broomfield; 6-4 senior Ryan Daberkow of Pueblo South; 6-4 senior Tim Gainey of Mitchell; and 5-11 senior Erick Jackson of Evergreen. Bahl of Broomfield was named 4A Player of the Year and Brent Garretson of Sierra was named 4A Coach of the Year. Named to the 4A All-State Second Team were: 6-1 senior Biran Beecraft of Rifle; 6-2 sophomore David Birkle of Adams City; 6-7 senior Delano Billingsley of Lewis-Palmer; 6-3 senior Jarid Neuschwanger of Sheridan; and 6-2 senior Tommy Russell of Sierra. In Class 2A, the boys named Honorable Mention All-State from this area were Jesse Rousset of Mancos, Justin Schmitt of Dolores, and Kieth Pierce of Dolores County. Taking 2A First Team honors were: 6-4 senior Cole Henderson of Swink; 6-4 senior Tom Hubbard of Limon; 6-3 junior Matt Morrison of Jefferson Academy; 5-11 senior Kevin Prior of Sangre de Cristo; and 6-0 senior Chris Robuck of Nucla. 2A Player of the Year was Henderson and 2A Coach of the Year went to Troy Geiser of Sangre de Cristo. Garnering 2A Second Team kudos were: 5-10 senior Dustin Curtis of Sangre de Cristo; 5-9 senior Keith Flores of Swink; 6-5 senior Levi Kaess of Swink; 6-3 senior Justin Perkins of Envangelical Christian; and 6-2 senior Wendel Scurlock of Riverview Christian. Chosen All-Colorado for girls hoops were: 5-7 senior Chelsea Domenico of Horizon; 6-2 senior Katy Flecky of Highlands Ranch; 5-11 senior Julie Gjertsen of Arvada West; 5-10 senior Whitney Law of Chatfield; and 6-2 junior Ann Strother of Highlands Ranch. Flecky was chosen Player of the Year and Maurice Noll of West Grand picked Coach of the Year. Jennifer Trevillian, a 5-8 junior point guard of Dolores, was named Class 2A First Team All-State. Joining her on that elite list were: 5-6 senior Shonda Brown of West Grand; 5-8 senior Kyla Flavin of Sanford; 6-0 senior Hannah Sheehan of West Grand; and 5-9 senior Laura Yahn of Caliche. Sheehan was named 2A Player of the Year and Noll of West Grand was named 2A Coach of the Year. Taking 2A Second Team honors were: 5-4 senior Jessica Brown of West Grand; 5-8 junior Jennifer King of Swink; 5-6 senior Ashley Fondus of Caliche; 6-1 sophomore Kylee O’Dwyer of Limon; and 6-1 junior Kari Sherwood of Holly. |
