By Jim Thomas Journal Sports Editor A Montezuma-Cortez High School wrestler and a Mancos High School coach were honored as they were chosen All-Colorado and Class 2A Coach of the Year by The Denver Post. Cole Allison, who won the 171-pound Class 4A state title, was chosen to the All-Colorado Team (all classifications) by one of the state’s leading newspapers. Allison lost only one match all season (finals of the Warrior Classic) and breezed through his matches at State while finishing with a sparkling 41-1 mark. Allison is signed, sealed and will be delivered to the University of Northern Colorado at Greeley when he starts his collegiate wrestling career. Joining him were coach Cal Cherrington, Middle Park; and wrestlers Ben Cherrington, Middle Park; Mike Silengo, Hilltop Baptist; Chris Nissen, Standley Lake; Sammy Vigil, Adams City, Ross Montour, Standley Lake. "Personally, I think this is a great honor," Bryant said. "This is a nice recognition and I really appreciate it. This honor is really a testament to my boys’ hard work. And I guess, my hard work as well. It is just a great honor. It just shows that hard work pays off." Kyle Riddell of Dolores County was chosen Class 2A First Team. Riddell won the 103 state title. Jeremiah Muniz of Mancos, won won state at 130, and state titleist Derek Thompson, heavyweight from Dolores, were also on the list. Joining them were: 112 Silengo, Hilltop Baptist, senior; 119 Kevin Salazar, Sanford, junior; 125 Rob Garvey-McCabe, Nucla, senior; 135 Dustin Uhland, Eads, junior; 140 Todd Shank, Revere, senior; 145 Robbie Doman, Holyoke, senior; 152 Dan Roesch, Del Norte, senior; 160 Rick Osburn, Akron, senior; 171 Daniel Neal, Strasburg, junior; 189 Matt Krom, Strasburg, senior; and 215 Martin Beauprez, Wiggins, senior. Freshman 112-pounder Anthony Mestas, who took fourth in state, was named All-State Honorable Mention. "I think it is a great honor for them," Bryant noted. "I know most of the honors go to that first-place wrestling team. But it shows what these boys have accomplished." |
