april 7, 2001 STAFF REPORT The post-season awards for the concluded boys and girls basketball season are coming in. Four Montezuma-Cortez High School players were honored by the Southwestern League as they were named All-Conference. Senior Chris Garland was chosen to the First Team. He helped lead the Panthers to a berth in the Class 4A State Basketball Tournament in Denver. Also named to the First Team were senior Ryan Jobe of Fruita, senior John Griego of Durango, senior Andrew Roberts of Central, junior Eric Reiners of Fruita, and senior Nick McCoola of Durango. Marcus Mortensen, a sophomore point guard, was one of the few underclassmen on the Second Team. Joining him on the Second Team were junior Brady Butler of Grand Junction High, senior Dustin Phillips of Central of Grand Junction, senior Chris Bolka of Durango, junior Zack Smith of Montrose, and senior Randy Kendall of Fruita-Monument. There was a tie for Coach of the Year honors. Vic Kintz of Central, Kim Fitzgerald of Durango, and Tom Burus of Fruita were chosen. Two Panther girls received Second Team honors. They were Stefanie Allison and Casey Bauer. They helped MCHS to a second-round Regional finals game. |
