MCHS competes at Western Slope Invite

The Montezuma-Cortez High School girls varsity tennis team will be busy this weekend. They are competing at the Western Slope Invitational in Grand Junction. The tournament opened Friday, April 6, and concludes today, April 7.

The Panthers have not competed since they lost 1-6 at Hotchkiss on March 24.

Cortez forfeited the top singles match to Wendy Bodwell. No. 2 singles player Tracy Berhost of MCHS lost to Haley Benson in a good match 4-6, 6-1, 2-6. Cathy Carver, no. 3 singles player, fell to Hotchkiss’ Cara Schmidt 0-6, 0-6.

Panthers Amanda Frazier and Melinda Lee lost their top doubles match to Jenna Taylor and Melissa Clark 3-6, 3-6. However, things picked up on the day as Amanda Norris and Ashley Reed outlasted Hotchkiss’ Kelly Adams and Holly Lynch 7-6, 6-7, 7-5.

In no. 3 doubles, the MCHS duo of Christina Schaak and Britany Johnson lost a heartbreaker 6-7, 3-6 to Aimee Hodges and Louise Schum. No. 4 doubles Mandi Rollman and Joelynn Hicks lost to Hotchkiss’ Marci Hodges and Mindy Holman 0-6, 1-6.

The Panthers opened the season with a 2-5 loss to Paonia. They also lost 2-5 to Delta. No information was available from their match against Montrose on March 16.

MCHS will host rival Durango at 4 p.m. Tuesday, April 10, at Parque de Vida Tennis Courts. They visit Piedra Vista at 4 p.m. Thursday, April 12, and then play at Durango April 17. They host Central of Grand Junction April 20 and Fruita-Monument April 21. They travel to Glenwood Springs April 27 and Grand Junction High April 28. Regionals is set for May 4-5 at Grand Junction.
