Track teams stay busy over spring break

April 3, 2001

STAFF REPORT

Several area prep track and field teams competed at Moab, Utah, and Chandler, Ariz., during the first weekend of spring break.

Making one of the biggest personal accomplishments was Montezuma-Cortez High School’s Jeff Yarbrough. He finished third after clearing 6 feet, 4 inches.

"He really did well," MCHS head coach Bob Archibeque said. "That was not a PR (personal record) because he has gone out at 6-6 before. But he just barely missed 6-6. So, he really did well considering it was such a large meet and the competition he faced."

Discus thrower Colin Tansey just missed making the finals. He had a best toss of 136 feet, 9 inches, which was a PR for him, according to Archibeque.

Hurdler Levi Hill recorded to PRs in 110 and 300 at the big meet. He was electronically timed in 16.8 in the 110 and 43.3 in the 300. The 110 was a PR for this season while his 300 time was a personal best. He also just missed qualifying for the finals.

Long jumper Josh Lee went 23-8 and barely missed qualifying for the finals.

Archibeque was pleased with the 4X400 relay team which had its best time of the year. Lee, Yarbrough, James Durnin, and Walt Pape clocked 3:34.

Some 20 boys off the MCHS team went to the Red Rock Invitational at Moab. Archibeque did not have the results handy, which were just barely mailed to the school, but he did say that Jerome Tryon finished third in the high jump.

"But it was good that we had kids going in both directions," he said. "The ones who benefitted by going to Chandler did well and those that benefitted by going to Moab also did well."

The MCHS girls’ 4X800 relay team of Tessa Haukeness, Marie deBolt, Julie Christensen and Kristi Christensen did not place but cut a lot of time from their previous meet. The clocked 4 minutes, 38 seconds.

"They cut eight seconds off what they did the week before at Round Valley," MCHS head girls track coach Doug Anderson commented. "They are really coming along."

Several members off the Dolores County boys and girls track team turned in good times at Moab.

Shandra Johnson just missed taking first place in the long jump but scratched after leaping 16-0. She settled for third place with a leap of 15-6. Alyssa Redshaw turned in a time of 12.89 in the 100 dash for fifth. Although she did not qualify, Redshaw finished the 200 in 27.21.

Charlene Atkins had a good time in the 1,600 in 6:38 and teammate Tia Wood also did well in the same event in 6:41.

The girls’ 4X400 relay team of Wood, Atkins, Erin Fury and Amanda Johnson broke the five-minute barrier in 4:58.

Bru Meyer turned in a PR in the 100 dash in 11.93. Meyer also recorded a PR in the 400 in 55.79. Jake Williams ran his first 3,200 and passed some 20 runners enroute to an 11:41.06 clocking.

Mancos boys took third in the 4X400 relay (time unavailable). Members of that unit were Travis Knight, Philip Wilson, Chase Davis, and Jakob Tallent.

Travis Clark captured first place in the discus with a throw of 135-7 which was good for a PR. Wilson came in sixth in the 100 and seventh in the 200.

Amanda Kennedy came in second in the 100 in 13.42 and second in the 200 as well in 27.04.

The girls 4X100 relay team of Kennedy, Lacey Morris, Kerri Morgan, and Casey Orona placed among the top three.

Mancos also competed at the Pine River Co-Ed Relays in Bayfield this past Saturday, March 28. That was the inaugural event for the new all-weather track at that school.

The discus team of Rachel Russell and Clark came in second with a combined throw of 215.0. The shot put team of Russell and Josh Seymour placed fourth with a combined toss of 66.1.

The 4X100 relay team of Alan Cummings, Morgan, Morris, and Wilson came in second place in 50.31. The 4X200 relay squad of Cummings, Morgan, Morris, and Jesse Rousett took first in 1:46.4. The 4X400 relay team of Wilson, Morgan, Morris, and Rousset also came in first (no time available).

Dolores, although it was scheduled to go Moab, did not attend the meet. Dolores, Dove Creek and Mancos will head to the Shiprock Invitational this Saturday, April 7, at Chieftain Stadium. MCHS will go to the Page, Ariz. Invitational this Saturday.
