April 3, 2001

STAFF REPORT

DURANGO — The Montezuma-Cortez High School varsity girls soccer team will return to action at 5 p.m. today, April 3, at Riverview Park in Durango. They will take on the Demons in the first game of their annual home-and-home series.

This will be the first time new head coach Monica Plewe has guided a team against the Demons, who have been a powerhouse in girls soccer.

For the Panthers, it has been a long time since they last played a game, the opener, at Norman Johnson Memorial Field in Cortez.

After playing four games on the road after opening the season at home, they will get back to the friendly confines of Norman Johnson Memorial Field when they host Fruita-Monument at 5 p.m. Friday, April 6, and then host Montrose at noon Saturday, April 7.

The Panthers took on Central of Grand Junction on March 23 and lost 3-0. They fell the next day to Grand Junction High 5-0.

Against the Warriors, it was a good game through most of the first half as they fought back and forth with neither team gaining much of an advantage. Central did score to take a 1-0 lead at the half.

Central scored twice more in the second half. MCHS Nikki Fuchs played in the net the entire time, making 10 saves.

Again, the Panthers played well in the first half against the Tigers the following day. The Tigers led 2-0 at the half and then scored three times in the second half.

"They (GJHS) scored their first two goals with in the first five minutes of the game," Plewe commented. "After that our girls played fabulous soccer. The girls stepped up to the aggression level we needed and came away with their heads up. One of GJHS’ second-half goals was a penalty kick."

Fuchs did not show she was tired and played the entire game at goalie. She made 15 saves.

"I'm also proud of the way the girls represented our school. They were a class act while we were traveling over the weekend," Plewe added.
