Mar. 27, 2001 BY JIM THOMAS On-and-off the basketball court, Kerri Morgan has always been a leader and a first-class individual. During the football season, kept the team’s statistics and was a manager. She competes on several relays and triple jumps during the track and field season in the spring. But where she shines is in the gym. Morgan, one of the only two seniors on this past season’s Mancos High School varsity girls basketball team (the other Amanda Kennedy), helped the Blue Jays to the semifinals of the Class 2A District III Basketball Tournament and a 10-11 overall record. The Jays finished fourth in the rugged San Juan Basin League regular-season race. "She was our leader," MHS head girls coach Kevin Dimmick commented. "She was the coach on the floor during the games. In the four years that I had her (varsity), she was always the first in the gym all of those years. What can you say about commitment like that. I wish I had more girls like her." She was selected First Team All-Conference for her efforts. She averaged 15.3 points per game (scoring a season-high 26), grabbed 4.7 rebounds and dished out 1.6 assists this past season. Morgan again was honored and played in the Colorado Coaches of Girls’ Sports All-State Basketball Game on March 18, at Northglenn High School near Denver. Although she did not score, she did play and contribute in helping the Red (South) Team to a 68-65 win over the Blue (North) Team, according to Dimmick. Cassidy Haught of Norwood, also selected to play in the elite game, scored 10 points and played well. Morgan will also play on June 13 in the Colorado High School Coaches Association’s All-State Game at the University of Northern Colorado in Greeley. She is the daughter of Pat Morgan of Mancos. |
