First Four Corners Cup this Sunday

AZTEC, N.M. — The first race of the Four Corners Cup Mountain Bicycle Series will be held this Sunday, March 25, in this northwest New Mexico community.

This is the first scheduled race of the cup series. Actually, the first race was held March 10 as part of the Blue Mountain Triathlon. Those bike riders who participated in the triathlon (28-mile bike ride) received points toward the end-of-season standings. They received 30 points for doing any section of the triathlon, half a first-place finish in the future mountain bike races. The Four Corners Cup is a mountain bike points series consisting of 11 races held throughout the Four Corners Area. For information about the Four Corners Cup Series, phone (970) 264-415.

The first official race will be held at Aztec. This race will consist of a weekend of events surrounding the annual UFO landing site of 1941. Racers and non-racers will be treated to a tour of the alleged site following the ride.

This is a new race for the series. The race will start at 10 a.m. and leave from the center of town.

Each racer, whether beginner, sport or expert, will race different route distances. The cost of this event is $25 which will also include a host of events including a barbecue. Other activities include a Spacebee for grade-school youngsters, a play production; and a presentation entitled "Stardust: The true story of the great UFO crash of ‘48" which will be at San Juan College in Farmington, a costume contest/parade, and more activities on the day of the race.

The third race of the series wil be held in Farmington on Pinion Mesa on April 21. The Battle of the Badlands is one of the original races in the Four Corners Cup Seies and will again be hosted by the City of Farmington and San Juan College.
