STAFF REPORT

Members of the Cortez Special Olympics Snowshoe team captured four gold, two silver, and four bronze medals at the recently-held Colorado State Winter Games at Copper Mountain Resort.

The group has been competing as a team in snowshoeing for three years. And they have been making a name for themselves. They decided to now call themselves the Cortez Chili Peppers with their slightly borrowed slogan of "When you’re hot, you’re hot." And that was certainly the case at this year’s games.

Since they formed, they have been turning heads. They have been winning an extraordinary amount of medals. This year they turned a lot more heads when at least every member came away with a medal. This year’s team was composed of Jacob Milligan, Lara Gatewood, Josephy Casarez, Eric Garcia, and Jennifer Romero. They participated in events ranging from 50- and 100-meter races to 300, 500 and one kilometer distance races. Casarez and Gatewood are new to the team while Garcia, Milligan and Romero are veterans.

The team is actively looking for new athletes to participate next year. They are open to people with or without developmental disabilities. Non-disabled can compete as unified partners in events such as a two-person or four-person relay. For more information, phone team coaches Maxine and Jim Carton at 565-7169.

The Cortez Chili Peppers said they wanted to thank Wendy’s Restaurant of Cortez for their help in providing hot chili for each of the team’s practices. Their chili was appreciated, they said, and it was the inspiration for the team’s new name.
